I've searched the FAQ's and stickies about replacing my clutch and can't find the information I need, other than that I should get a 5th gen clutch. The motorvate site explains clutch replacement with the transmission removed -- is this necessary? Is clutch replacement difficult for the mechanically inclined? Are there other websites/threads that explain it better? What are all the parts I need? What other things should I replace while I've got it all apart?

My Max has 147k miles on it and the clutch slips by about 500 rpm in 4th or 5th gear when floored at about 3000 rpm. Also, the shifter is very notchy and hard to get in gear sometimes, it often grinds when putting it in reverse even when the car is stopped.

 

The transmission definetly needs to come off of the car to replace the clutch. Other than putting in a new pressure plate, disk, throwout bearing and pilot bearing, it will also be smart to re-surface the flywheel. Any trans shop can do this for you for about $40.

Also another good thing to replace while your under there would be the axles if their old as well.

The motorvate website is pretty good in explaining the install with pretty good pics. If your fairly machanically inclined, then you should be ok doing it.
