Y pipe and Cat back being installed
Hey guys,
I am getting a Warpspeed Y pipe and an OBX type-H catback being installed in my Max this weekend. I am a bit scared of my car sounding like a pocket rocket. Should I be concerned?
I am getting it done at Jeff's Maximum Tuning shop in LI.
I have heard a bunch of sound clips but all seem to have a modified or aftermarket intake and/or high flow cat's. Which I assume adds to the exhaust sound, so my question is will my car's exhaust noise be less compared to those cars with an aftermarket intake and cat? If yes how much? Do aftermarket intakes and cats in addition to Y pipe and cat back add a lot more sound to the exhaust sound?

It shouldnt sound too bad. Especialy if you leave the resenator on. I have warpspeed Y, high flo cat, eliminated the resonator, and put a high perf muffler on it. Its only loud when I accelerate hard or when I'm going up hill. Even then its not really too loud. I think it sounds ok.
I just took a few videos today you can check them out at www.putfile.com/smotz
Let me know what you think.

thanks! I am not sure which part is the resenator. I know i am replacing the Y pipe after which is the Catallitic converter which i am leaving and I am replacing the B pipe and muffler after that...so do u mean the catallitic convertor when you say resenator?

The resonator is the long tube thing between the cat and the muffler. Its round and thick like a long coffee can.
I tested them a few times. Works for me. Maybe you have to update your windows media player or something? They do take a minute or 2 to load.
Try the revving one first since its the smallest.

WOW, sounds a hell of alot better than I thought it would especially since you eliminated the resinator. You think the high flow cat makes a difference in Hp's, did you change the B-pipe too?

ok smotz the resonator that you are talking about is part of the stock B pipe, its not seperate. So I am changing the B pipe (with resonator) and the muffler with the OBX type - H cat back which includes everything after the catallitic convertor (b pipe, resonator which is part of the bpipe and the muffler). So now tell me what will my exhaust sound like compared to someone who has a high flow cat and a aftermarket high flow intake.
thanks!
thanks!

OMG WHAT'S A B-pipe!?!?!?!?!?..............naw just kidding man, it's the pipe right after the CAT it connects to the muffler, basically the last part of the exhaust..I heard if you change that, it comes with a new type of resonator and it makes it sound louder no matter what...

From the outside I hear it sounds really good. A lot of people look when I drive in town and stuff and I don't see any laughing like sometimes I see when weedwackers drive by and stuff. My friends say it sounds pretty bad ***. Doesn't sound like a 8 cyl but it deff doesn't sound like a 4 cyl weedwacker.
I haven't really heard it form the outside yet. I got 2.5 inch piping going from the hi flo cat all the way back to the volt perf muffler. Got it done at meineke. The dude was pretty cool. Took him a while to bend the piping right to go from the cat to the exhaust. He did a good job though because it doesn't knock or hit anything.

you are right, I am sure the sound will change to be louder then what it is now but my original question was that how much louder with a stock intake and cat, compared to all the clips on this site which seem to have a aftermarket intake and cat. Do those things effect the exhaust sound as well?

sorry MAGNAFLOW, the sound all really depends my friends car has a muffler im not sure which kind and a CAI and it sounds like hes going 40mph when hes actually in reverse going like 2mph, my magnaflow is pretty quite deep and mellow

Now I'm no professional but I don't think the intake would really effect the way the exhaust sounds. And if it does it would be very minimal. However aftermarket intakes do create sound of their own. And they will only make any noticible sound when you hammer on the gas. Worthwhile mod imo.
The cat also probably won't effect the sound that much. And wont give much if any HP gains. Maybe 2 or 3 HP I am guessing and from what I have read. I just got the high flo cat because it came with my WS Y pipe. I think it was $250 shipped for the WS Y and high flo cat. Also it gives me piece of mind that all the exhaust parts are new and fitted together good. Like not bolting a new Y pipe to a old crusty cat.. So I know it has no leaks. Clean tight new fittings and stuff.

I think Cats effect the sound a lot! Ever try removing just the cat off a car and see how it sounds? This use to be or maybe still is the cheap way of getting power and making your car sound loud.
anyways I just hope the warpseed Y pipe and OBX doesnt make my car sound like a freaking rocket. I'll get rid of it if it does...
