Clicking in engine bay

When I start my car I hear clicking and as I stand at the front under the hood playing with the TB I notice the ticking goes with the RPM's...im thinking a bent valve, but how could that be with an automatic that has a rev limiter at what...6,200? the rev limiter is supposed to prevent that, so I am then told that this could be a bad coil pack, hoiwever I am throwing no code's (not even ghost). Any advice?

You'd notice a pretty loud noise (relatively) and some lost power with a bent valve. It may just be regular valve chatter, could be a thousand things. Get a s***hoscope or a piece of hose and try to pinpoint where the ticking is coming from.

Could just be your injectors working properly. The maxima injectors tend to be pretty dam* loud sometimes. Even with the hood closed on a warm day, they are loud.

I also get a noise like that, just a light RPM-dependent ticking.

if the piston hit the valve he would DEFINITLY no it, there would be no doubt or time to isolate, it would just be bad.

My old maxima had a similiar problem and I just found out what it was..I wish i remembered the name of the part thats clicking but i cant..The reason why I forgot what needs to be fixed to stop that clicking sound is simple..It costs 500 to fix...

I'm also getting this clicking problem on the engine I just had swapped in. I got a 1 year warranry on it, so what should I tell them to look at?

I was thinking, as a start: sticking valves, coil packs, knock sensor, anything else?

I've had the ticking since my car was new, 8 yrs. ago. I took it to the dealer and told them to fix the power brake check valve, because this forum said that's what it was, and even listed the TSB#. The dealer assured me they performed the service. Well, the sound never went away.

The funny thing is that not more than a year ago I looked up the TSB online, and the power brake check valve only applies to autos! I have a 5-spd. DOH!!!

Long story short, I've had the ticking for over 8 yrs., and whatever it is, it's harmless. It does seem to go away if the motor is revved, but it comes back when the motor is coming back to idle. It's like Dre when it ticks and it tocks....

Mine too!

Hi

I have just bought a 95 Maxima QX (UK model with 55,000 miles) and there is a loud ticking in the engine bay - assumed it was the injectors then started to worry about lifters. Glad I saw this thread but with all the talk of how quiet this engine is (mine is the 2 litre) I am surprised at how loud this tick is. Is this really normal for this engine? Anything else to check?

Cheers

Will do, thanks - can't seem to access the search facility as yet but will have a good browsw; hopefully it is the injectors being 'normal' !

Chances are it's just the injectors. Anything else and you would notice a decrease in performance. I've owned 2 Maxima's now and both have had loud injectors. When I first bought my Max, I was quite worried about it until I talked to the mechanics at Nissan and found that a lot of Nissan cars out there have loud injectors.

As for the search, you have to become a donating member. The best $20/$25 you can spend IMO. Makes it much easier for learning anything you want to know about Maximas.

Thanks much for that. Over here in the Uk the car is so rare that it is difficult to talk to anyone about them! You seem to confirm that noisy injectors are the norm so I feel much better about it.

Thanks for the tip for joining - I'll do that. Thanks again.

Thanks! I'd love to make it quieter somehow but who knows! Thanks for the welcome too. Much appreciated.

I've had the ticking noise too, it's pretty dang loud even when the hood is shut, but no problems after 3 years of owning the car; I just figure if it ain't broke, don't go trying to fix it. With my luck, I'll fudge 12 things up while trying.

Normal ticking:
1.) You will hear ticking from fuel Injectors most vehicles.
2.) Cat Converter. When the car is pretty warm you will hear a ticking from your max. It's hard to pinpoint but is probably your 2 precats and cat back. (which is why its hard to pinpoint where its coming from. But yes it's underneath your car. Its a lot louder when you shut off the car. but it does away after it cools a bit.
3.) IACV valve also ticks. (although i don't think i've ever heard it)

Thats all i know about
