What are some indications of your starter going?

How much for a new one and is there any options as to better quality ones to buy?
I have a 95 with about 50,000 miles.
Every now and then it doesn't start first try which apparently is common. The other day tho when I tried to start it, as it turned over it cranked/turned over slower and slower and didn't start. I tried again and it started right away. It's been fine ever since.
Thanks
Josh

Josh...the same thing happened to me. I have a 95 and around 50,000 is started acting crazy. It wouldnt start sometimes and then if i tried 5 mins later it would. Finally one day it woldnt start at all. I called AAA and the guy took screwdriver and tapped on the starter a few times and then it started. I took it straight to the dealership and got a new starter put in. I think it was like $300, but i could be wrong. Good luck

A customer will ask...what aisle is the ice cream in...he'll look at them like they're a dummy and respond..in the icecream aisle, and then walk away.

- loose or dirty battery terminal connections
- discharged battery, possibly because of weak alternator
- weak battery because it is approaching end-of-life
If your '95 Maxima still has the original battery it is time to replace it.
Starter symptoms include:
- ugly grinding sounds while engine cranks
- high-pitched singing sound instead of normal Rrr-Rrr-Rrr cranking sounds
- flat-out won't crank even with good battery and good cables
PartsAmerica.com is having a Launch Special, 25% discount on all parts through the end of this month. Their regular prices for a remanufactured starter are:
- Worldwide $140
- Beck/Arnley $192
- Bosch $360

You may order from PartsAmerica.com and save the shipping cost by picking up your order at any of their stores.
Some Nissan technicians insist that non-factory parts lead to grief. However, I've had generally good experience with name-brand aftermarket parts.

When a starter is completely dead, there will be no noise at all, except for a faint clicking in the engine compartment from the dead starter. If the starter is going bad, intermittent starting problems are typical. As the brushes wear out inside of the starter, dead spots are created. When the starter lands on a dead spot, no connection can be made. Sometimes additional attempts at cranking or physically whacking the starter with a screwdriver or something will get it to spin away from the dead spot so that it will start again. But, of course, the problem will get worse, so you best be on your way to the parts store when you get it crunk again.

A starter goes bad when either the contacts/brushes inside the starter wear away, or the pinion gear snaps a teeth or something.
If the starter intermittently operates, then it's probably a contact problem with the brushes. That's why when you bang the starter with a tool, it might get the contacts into the correct position to start the car, but they'll be off next time you try to start the car.
However, if it's a starter gear problem, then there will be a high pitched scraping, spinning sound when you turn the key to start. It sounds HORRIBLE! Sometimes it sounds like the sound made when you try to start the car with the engine already on. But most often it sounds like the high pitched whine you hear when a diesel bus starts. Except the car doesn't start!
Good luck.
