Y-Pipe ROCKS!!!

I went over to Budget Exhaust this morning and got them to install their stainless steel y-pipe, along with a stock cat replacement I got last week. Took about an hour, and the mechanic did a great job. Turns out the Bosal cat had a small hole next to the bung, which he torched/sealed up. Didn't even bother trying to unbolt the severely rusted bolts everywhere, just torched them off.

Well, when I drove away, I was pretty impressed with the results. However, since the traffic was pretty heavy, couldn't really get a good feel for the change. I got home, took care of a bunch of stuff, then went and grabbed a friend and headed up to the lake. That's when I got it. Damn, that pipe is amazing! Stopped at the lights and the car sounds like I just turned it off. Accelerate a bit and I get a nice low purr. Mash the pedal and it just purrs louder, without hitting the previous pipe's higher notes. And the throttle response is frickin' sweet! We had people pulling up in the right lane at stops, hoping to pass when the light went green but in all instances, they ended up disappearing in the rear view mirror in seconds. I'm not even going to talk about all the passing I ended up doing. Not sure why, but alot of people out there today were actually driving BELOW the speed limit.

Needless to say, my friend was impressed with the latest changes.

I can't believe I waited this long to get the y-pipe. My budgetary reason is that the oem pipe had developed two leaks, one in the pipe, and one in the flex section - and that flex section's braiding was pretty much gone on the top part - and needed to be replaced. So I could either shell out 600 for a stock pipe or get the Budget pipe.

I was hoping that along with this power boost and quieter exhaust (quieter in the sense that there are no leaks) I would be getting a break on my mileage, but now I find that it's almost impossible to resist mashing the pedal, not only for the sweet acceleration, but also to hear that sweet deeper purr.

By the way, I'm fully stock, intake and exhaust wise, with the exception of the K&N drop-in filter and of course the new y-pipe.

Budget kicks @ss!!!! I had mine installed today. The shop that installed it for me was even impressed with it. It gives you a nice little growl thats loud enough to let someone know that you've done something to it. Reset the ecu for best results.

I had intended to do that, but ended up forgetting to do it last night. There seems to be some disagreement, though, with how long you need to have the negative cable disconnected. I've read two basic times, one which is like 10 minutes and another which is like 8 hours.

Anyone know what the actual amount of time to leave the cable disconnected is in order to reset the ECU?

i take it you have an auto since you're driving a GLE. since it's a 96 you probably have the same type of ECU and O2 sensor/catalyst configuration as my mom's 95. do you get a check engine light with the ypipe on? i remember my 97 always had a CEL...just wondering for future modifications on my mom's 95.

y-pipes shouldn't cause a light. what light would you have? only thing i would assume is if you damaged one of the o2 sensors or forgot to plug them back in.

if i'm not mistaken my ypipe on my 97GXE had O2 sensors on the top of the ypipe and after the pre catalyst on the same pipe. without looking at my mom's 95, i believe it had one O2 sensor on the ypipe and the second on the actual main catalyst. correct? this is why i'd think the 95 wouldn't get a CEL, but my 97 always had a CEL...someone please clarify this.

My ECU was never reset after installation of my Budget y-pipe two years ago, and I question the need to do so.

No CEL. I've only had a CEL once and that was about 9 years ago for an O2 sensor that was replaced on warranty.

I had a warpspeed Y pipe and OBX Cat back installed over the weekend. I was stock everything prior to that...to be honest. I think it sounds too loud. I am kinda not happy with it. I think i should ahve just done the Y pipe but my stock cat back was bad so i needed to replace it. Y pipe was only a bonus. I would take my stock cat back if I could.

I have a stainless steel Budget y-pipe and a K&N panel filter. I too was concerned about noise as I didn't want any.

I am happy to report that there is no discernible sound difference at idle or when cruising. At WOT, there is a bit of a growl that I, in fact, quite like.

Go for it!

I agree that's there's no difference at idle (in fact I think it's even quieter) but I can hear and feel a slight difference when cruising though. It's just a bit deeper, almost a muted rumble, the kind of difference only the driver will notice. And I can only notice it if it's real quiet, no traffic, stereo off and windows rolled up etc.

Is everything else stock, ie. no intake, aftermarket muffler/cat?

Where did you get your y-pipe installed? I live in So Cal and I may be getting a pipe in the near future.

Also, if you don't mind; how much did it set you back?

Thanks.

Hey I got mine installed by Vision Auto Sport. It's located in Hacienda Heights. They are a really good and knowledgeable shop. At first they wanted to charge me 90 bucks because they had to drop one of the engine supports but and said it would take 1 1/2 hours but they got it done in an hour and only charged me 65 bucks. If you have cash you have a little bit more barganing power. They have a website also www.visionautosport.com it has all of their contact information there.

BOBO I see you have a Budget also. Does yours make any noise in the upper RPM range? Mine seems to make a little hiss or "ing" noise when its at 6000-6500 rpms other than that it sounds great. Is that normal or will it go away once it breaks in?

From everything i've heard, these y-pipes sound like a great mod. my stock y-pipe is currently off....i put off finishing my clutch a couple of days for various reasons.....i might as well go ahead and order a warpspeed Y for it....not extremely expensive, gives good results, and the stocker is in bad shape anyway.

yep i think i want to lol. i better check my bank account first.

In short: Yes, no. The aftermarket types do tend to let off a resonation (errrr... "ing" noise) at the end of the gear when pushed. Since I live/work in the city (Clrwtr/St.Pete) and drive like crazy everywhere, I get odd looks from other drivers when mine makes that noise passing them by. Makes 'em wonder if it is a mod or something about to fall off. You do get used to it, especially if you are accelerator friendly. Anyways, mine is a budget stainless Y-pipe. Couldn't have dealt with a better company. Shipped fast, on time, and in proper condition. It was the cheapest stainless/ high outpup y-pipe available IMO. Canadian $ translates to money saved boys. I Definetly give it props. Just temper your expectations if you have an auto.
