Well after a 2 mth wait it's time.....
After dropping a piece of the timing chain tensioner inside of my timing cover 2 mths ago on the attempt of replacing my faulty water pump it's time to pay some expert on removing the timing chain cover of my 95 SE 5 spd with 269,000 miles. I am getting diffferent shop times for labor. Who knows how much time it would take to remove the timing chain cover off my car in order to find the little spring loaded piston that goes on the timing chain tensioner. It is lodged somewhere in the timing chain cover. The engine was not started once I did this and has sat up since May. I had one shop say they will have to remove the ol pan to get to it. Some one with some seasoned experience please help.

Did you try fishing it out with a magnetic stick thing ?? Try removing the lower oil pan to see if it fell all the way to the bottom.
If you cant fish it out, it may be cheaper to swap in a lower mileage motor. By the time you take the motor out, remove the cover, re-seal the cover, and re-install, you're still left with a 269,000 mile motor. Really HIGH mileage if you ask me.

Well, got the car back today fromm shop here in town. Seems that the tensioner guide is still somewhere in the engine. The mechanic says it is not causing aa problem anywhere when he replaced my water pump and put all the parts on again. The car ran just like it did before (great). I am happy with the repair but just wondering could I have taken on this job thus saving a lot of money. I sort of think, I was over my head with replacing the water pump and needed a mechanic from the get-go. I limited to major repairs on my car.

I paid this particular shop here that is very reputable here in Memphis $69.00 an hour for labor x's 5 hours and a oil change. Total $412.00 plus cost of a new timing belt tensioner pulley ($71.35), water pump from O'Reilly's Auto Parts ($54.00), antifreeze($7.50), tow to the shop ($50.00). Total around $605.00. Car runs fine. I will still sell the car for around $2500 here in Memphis. I should be able to get that I know. With all the parts that I have replaced or repaired on the Max, still the engine remains vibrant, just like I got it off the show room floor. My mechanic says these engines are some of the best out there. Go Maxima
