I just went to a local performance shop, but they said they only do parts purchased through them. Would I have any luck at a meineke? Would goodyear or any other regular auto repair shop be able/willing to do it?

i woudl do it in my garage...but...u will just have to ask around ur town..it really depends on the shop manager if its worth it or not...expet to pay top labor for a franchise store like that

in my garage in less than a few hours. do it yourself. it really is just a matter of loosening and tightening some bolts.

at my buddys house cuz he has a bigger garage... and it was like 20 bellow zero when we worked on it.. :
but to answer the question.. i would recomend a shop to do it just because $hit like bolts might be welded on and they do it so u dont get any exhaust leaks.. go to midass or mieneke and get it done they shouldnt charge u more than 50 bucks

i was thinking of doing it myself in my buddy's garage but we went under the car today to check on the e-brake (groaning noises) and the cat is rusted pretty badly with one end of the y-pipe.

Yeah, I went under my car all tools in hand to install to find out that the rust was just too much for me. I put all the tools away and found me a phone book to call up stores.

Most of the stores (Miniekkeeee, midas, firestone, jify luby) said not they don't install aftermarket parts or they said that they won't install something that is illegal (becuase it removes the pre-cats). So then I asked them if they could just torch they bolts, and they told me nope.

So after like 2 weeks straight of calling around I finally came around a store what would do it. But it wasn't for cheap.

argh, what a pain, I was planning on taking it to meineke. Do you think they'll do it if i tell them the main cat will stay in place?

like 100 bucks or so. I mean it wasn't terrible. But still.

The main cat isn't the problem. Its the pre-cats that is why they have an issue.

Don't mention anything about a y-pipe, just get the bolts replaced and DIY.

go to your local exhaust shop if you dont want to deal with it yourself. it shouldnt cost anymore than $50 to swap out. yeah you can diy as well if you have the tools to get the bolts off the cat. you can have a shop do it, $15-20 to get the bolts off the cat and then go back home to swap it yourself, but you might as well save yourself the hassle and spend a little more to have them do it while the car is up on the lift.

thats tempting.. i don't know what i want to do now. I'm taking my car in today to get my e-brake fixed and front right wheel bearing ("fixed" it last time but still makes squeeling noises) should i tell them to change the bolts while i'm at it. Is the Y-pipe an easy job?

i honestly would like to. But I took it to a mehcanic, when getting my e-brake checked and he said he'd do what he can. Turns out someone patched up my cat or something ie theres welds or something. Also the cat is rusted to **** looks like if i pull the bolts out it'll flake apart. Might be risky to do myself.

Well...if you take it to a mechanic and that happens to him then he'll ask you to pay for a new cat anways. So why not try it your self and if it works, you saved yourself some doh!!
