When changing water pump....

when do I change the oil? I know water will fall down the timing chain cover, but I dont know when to change the oil and where the water will go. My idea was to drain the oil first, then do the WP, let the water drain out then change the oil. Or should I finish WP, then drain/change oil, then start up? Im doing this for a guy and I dont want to screw up, then maybe he'll have me do more mechanic work .

Also any think to check on the engine, I dont know how many miles it has an its a 96.

I also had the idea to stuff plastic or a paper towel down (just a little) in the spaces of the timing cover to catch possible things that mine fall.

And for those that glaze over the thread and want to flame me, I've had 3 3rd gens and Im replacing the WP on some other guys '96. TIA for the help

Do the water pump change, then when your all done, change out the oil before you go and crank the car over.
