Question: Steering Wheel Swap

Does anyone know if it takes a lot to replace my '96 Maxima's steering wheel with a '99 SE steering wheel?

I found one at the local junk yard with horn button and airbag for $150. Is this a good price?

BTW - My max has cruise control... The junk yard wheel has the cruise control switch on it as well.

Would the '99 sport wheel and cruise control fit the connections and such on my '96 Maxima? Will there be other things that I will need to replace other than just the steering wheel, airbag, button cover and cruise control switch?

You will need to rent a steering wheel puller from AutoZone or Advanced Auto and you will need to purchase a T-50 tamper resistent torx bit. It looks like a regular torx bit except it has a hole in the center. You can buy these at Sears and it seems like someone else was able to find a better deal at Napa.

Thanks for the info... I'd prolly been scratching my head over those Torx bits.

I'll post back to the thread after I am able to complete this... maybe a few updates as well if I run into frustrations and problems. LOL

I think the car I'm looking at has a good passenger side air bag also. It is a gold '99 Maxima with a dark brown dash. Don't know what the cost would be on it... but here is the info for the place I got the parts.

Insurance Auto Salvage
5814 IH 10 E, San Antonio, TX
7.2 mi E - (210) 661-2339

BTW - I'll sell you my wheel and airbag for what I paid on the replacement ($150) plus shipping if you would be interested. It is also brown in color.

does anyone know how many hours it would take a mechanically inclined person to swap out the steering wheel?

FYI - looks like it is a no go on the steering wheel... They told me $150 over the phone and when I get there, they say sorry that does not include the airbag. I specifically asked for the center button (airbag) and steering wheel along with the cruise control switch. SIGH... They now want $400 for the airbag and $150 for the steering wheel. And they do not even want to honor their mistake in the original price they quoted me. They suck!!!

If anyone out there has the black '99 sport steering wheel with cruise and airbag... I'm interested!!!
