Did I blow my DEK?

I just got the dek in last week (got motor from a friend who got it from a junk yard, 56K on it) and have been driving it kinda hard here and there making sure it wasnt going to die on my when I make the 8 hour drive to go to college this fall. I had been getting a back fire out of the muffler the last couple days so the other night it was doin it again and when I rev up around 5k or higher and let off it back fires. I was coming up to a stop sign and put it in neutral(doin about 30-40mph) when I put it in neutral to stop but b4 I did I reved it up to about 6.5k and clank, bang, clank and the car shut off.

Now I was in neutral reving the motor up when this happened. it sounded like something broke then continued to hit something til the car finally stopped and shut off. I tried to start it and heard the most horrible screaching type sound kinda high pitched, like the motor wasnt going anywhere but trying. like the flywheel would turn but something was scraping/ hitting something. SO I call a friend get the car towed about an hour and a half back to the house and the car STARTS! I was like dude it WOULD NOT start earlier. So I drove it hard around the neighborhood trying to re-brake whatever broke and caused my car to shut off. and it wouldnt, it ran fine. sounded weird initially but then was fine. friend said he saw something bounce from under my car when I was gettin on it but I looked on the road and didnt see anything.

Cranked it the next morning and it started up. I drove it a little and continued to try to break it because I knew there was something wrong. But the car ran strong and sounded fine. I was coming back into my subdavision put it in nuetral again and reved it up real good and held it and heard a clicking or something not the same sound as the night b4 but knew that wasnt good so I put it in nuetral and coasted to my driveway. when I got there I got out and popped the hood. smoke was coming out of somewhere and I stepped back and saw a ton of fluid leaking all over my drive way. It is trans fluid..well motor oil(80w 90) and I hear the clicking coming from the tranny.

Im taking tranny out tomorrow. Is that my only proble or could it be a bent valve or rod bearing or something in the motor? maybe broke clutch spring..or flywheel tooth thing? Ill kow more when I take out the tranny tomorrow.

It is a 5spd. just did the dek swap last week. It ran well for like 5 days..then this.

They shouldn't blow at 6500 rpms, my 152k mile de sees 6k rpms 10 times a day, and I haven't been having problems 3 months owning this car. But what you have sounds like a knock, probably threw a rod.

ok I use gtx 5w30 in the motor and this time 80w90 in the 5 spd tranny. I took tranny off today and had 2 holes in bell housing where it connects to main tranny body thats y the tranny fluid was all over the ground, broke 2 bolts off the pressure plate and that is what im assuming did all the damage so hopefully the motor has no problems and its all just the tranny

daaaaammmn Matt!!!

Glad that motor is still in good shape. Marvin (Datrannyman) is a good guy and can rebuild trannys with accuracy and speed. I'll call you tommorow and you his number.

I bought all new Flywheel bolts and PP bolts from Nissan for my swap, and I think your suppose to use some Blue Lock tight on them. Did they break, or just unthread ? Why did they break ? Did you use Nissan Bolts ??

They were the bolts that were on my other motor, i just re used them. my cousin said it was because I over tightened them. and yeah the bolts broke. the studs are in the flywheel and the bolt heads snapped off. Ill try and take pics today.

You can get away with over tightening flywheel bolts (as long as they are all the same torque), but pressure plate bolts are a bit tricky. Did you use any form of lok tite or sealant on the flywheel bolts?

Have someone else do it. I mean really you heard something break so you beat the crap out of it some more to make it break again?

Trq them down to spec !!!!
Obviously you didnt, and overtightened them. Go to sears and spend $70 on a trq wrench. Its a great investment for important bolts like that. Also comes in handy when doing valve covers and intake manifold bolts that crush a rubber gasket.

You're going to want to use heavy grade (red iirc) lok tite on the flywheel bolts. Most flywheel bolts are around 75 ft lbs, and most pressure plate bolts are around 14 ft lbs. BUT they vary from vehicle to vehicle. I prefer you spend the 15 bucks for a manual torque wrench, because you know if they are accurate. If an electronic or dial wrench breaks you will not know until it is too late.
