it says that Tokico Illumina Shocks (adjustable) are the best.... are they any different from TOKICO HP STRUTS/SHOCKS SET s ? ...i mean i dont care if its not adjustable...or should i care? ... do u guys adjust them very often?..there's like a 100 bux price difference..

i'm leaning towards 18" rims..cuz some ppl told me 17" will look bad even with a drop :-/

which other adjustable/non-adjustable shocks would u recommend with fair prices (less than 450) ?

 

Look, i have the illuminas and i think they're great...the hp's are more of a direct replacement type(stock) and if u use them, they might be a little stiff. You can look at the KYB AGX shocks, same principle as the illumina's, but not as good(so i've heard)...look around

I was lowered first. KYB AGX and H&R. I'm in the Canada and the kyb are a little harsh in the winter, but only untill the shock oil warms up with movement. Then I got rims.
I didn't want people looking at my car saying "hey, look at that funny jeep! That guy thinks he's driving an import casue he put some Nissan badge on it."

Drop first, because your factory rims will still look decent with it, then rims. I saw the chromies you are looking at on your other post and they look pretty decent. With the chrome window trim on your GLE they should look good!

there is nothing wrong with 17's if that is what you want get them, they do not look bad with drops at all

I have 20's on mine, and I wouldn't do anything lower than 19's IMO. I love my 20's and I am just now dropping it, it looked bad without a drop 'specially in the front since I had a system in the back to drop it down some... But the front looked bad. Now the front looks awesome.

 

btw I noticed a while back that that site basically says illuminas are the best.. well they're amazing and all, and of course a bit better than KYB. But, hands down Konis are the best shocks and struts.

 

if you're going to lower it, install the aftermarket struts at the same time. if you're going to install it yourself, it will save you time. if you're going to have a shop do it, it will save you the time AND money.

 

I bought my maxima for $5,240, 1995 5spd with 97k miles on it, and the previous owner made modifications to it, that I'm not too sure of. I'm just now getting interested into my maxima and want to review what it has, and was just wondering if you could tell me, is my max is lowered?









And my exhaust tip says "Nakayama Racing Sports" but I can't seem to find their exhaust products, only the rims they make. Any ideas? thanks

 

your max looks like it has a mild un-even drop....i say put the car up on a jack, take the wheel off, and see whta kind of setup you have.

 

Can you explain this "HUGE wheel gap?" The overall diameter of a 235/40-18 is the same as a 215/55-16. Does that mean stock rims look ridiculous as well?

 

It's the "should I get clears" phenomenon. Clears were cool in 1997, then they got uncool, but as of 2k5 they were cool again. Then the same started happening with hacked LEDs. Someone posts a hosted pic of an LED tail, and people starting replying that they want to be the first to buy it, when in reality, one can't even discern what they're looking at because the way the pic was taken is so poor.

The fact is 215/55-16 = 235/45-17 = 235/40-18, overall diameter roughly the same. But one guy claims the wheel gap changes and everyone follows and agrees how a larger rim looks ridiculous unless you spend more money that the car's worth on the suspension.

Good observation how people need reassurance here.

 

The car does look rediculously high with the stock rims on. When aftermarket rims are put on, it draws more attention to the area and hence makes the wheel gap seem even bigger.

 

I can put the max up on a jack and take the wheel off, but as far as understanding what I'll see goes, I'll be lost. Anything specific I should look for?

(If I'm asking too many questions and should just start researching suspension on my own let me know)

 

you should be able to tell if the struts and springs are aftermarket. or if your stock springs are cut

 

don't get bigger tires. I love my 15 steelies, and I bought a set of stock 17" 2k2 wheels (7 spoke), but never put them on thankfully. I got a 5 speed, so it is sporty enough for me, though I have no desire to spend tons of money on rims, shocks/struts, and tires, only to get worse gas mileage.

What kind of gas mileage do you guys with 20's get? I get 27-28 mixed highway-city, and 31 straight highway.

drop ur car first then get rims....17s are fine 18" tires are too expensive for the amount of tires i go through...KONI struts are the best and enjoy...

Yeah, 4x4 mode, man. those 15's look like you got cartoonish balloon tires and jacked suspension lol rockcrawler. Seriously, you need a drop. And to the thread starter, drop first, then get your rims. If you can see my sigpic ok, wheelgap is now consistent with tire/rim size and the whole car just looks more....normal... After you drop you'll have a better idea of what size/design wheels you want, etc. imho, wheels (and pretty much any other interior/exterior styling mod) are a decision you don't want to rush into.

 

And when you are dropping the car i suggest you do it right the first time. I think its always crucial to get the right set up. Do a lot of research and make sure you know what you are doing!!! NEVER get it because its cheap.

"I have Tokico Illuminas and Tein S-Techs for sale. I put them on my car last August. They only have about 2k miles on them. The car stayed at home while I went to school. They ride great and are 5-way adjustable. Also included are dust boots (to prevent damage to the strut cylinders) and bumpstops (to keep from bottoming out), spring insulators (on the top and bottom of each spring to prevent squeaking), extended travel rear mounts (designed and created by one of out .orgers and add about an inch of travel in the rear. I have yet to bottom out.) Also, all hardware is included and even camber bolts if you would like those to adjust camber in the future."

yup. 600 sounds like a fair price. Used springs usually 100 for the set and 100 for each of the shocks/struts sounds good. S-tech is a agressive drop in the front (2.2") and only .8" in the rear I believe.
Most of the struts will not provide warranty if your drop is over 2 inches. (at least with my kyb's). But, then again, you'll be the second owner of these so there won't be a warranty anyway.

Yeah I donated within the first 20 minutes of being on this forum. It helps a lot and I was able to learn a lot more faster by using it. And its only $20 not a big deal so why not
