Air Bag Light
Air Bag Light
SO.. My Air Bag Light is blinking.
I got into Diagnostic mode.. and I get 2 long flashes... and 2 short flashes.
I cannot, for the life of me, find out what these flashes mean.
Does anyone know?
thanks!

On most (99%) OBD-1 Vehicles that will mean code 22.

Edit- how to read
the longer flashes will be the first digit, and the flashes codes will be the second digit.
If it is a one digit code, it will display short flashes only.
Usually they are in numerical order.

the Factory Shop Manual has all sorts of diagnostic stuff on the airbags, including how to pull codes from the dashboard light. does your 98 have side airbags? they seem to be the main airbag problem... there's even a TSB or two about them.

I've heard that it is usually an issue with the pass seat side airbag.. but Ive tried wiggling things around.. then I tr to clear the code.. but it doesn't clear.
Does anyone know what the code means?
And Ive heard a couple of ways to clear this code.. but if someone knows the "right" way... I'd love to hear it!
c!
I had a blinking airbag light after some noob hit me in the parking lot. No damage but for some reason it started blinking. There is a how-to to reset the light in the stickys if that is what you are looking for.
I have the same problem...flashing air bag light. code said passenger side seat air bag module or something. Dealer said I need a new module for $400.
I say BS to that!
I tried clearing the code my pushing the button on the door 7 times in 5 seconds but it didnt clear.
Anyone have any ideas how to fix this...I'm assuming its some kind of pinched wire, but which wire is it??
Thanks

Get in the car and leave the door open.
Turn the ignition to ON but do not start.
As soon as you turn the ign on push the switch in the door frame 7 times in 10 seconds.
Start car without turning key off.
Turn car off, restart.
If that doesn't clear the light make sure all the wires under the seat are secure.
One thing you should notice after the first time you start the car in the procedure is the air bag light will still blink, but slower. After the restart the light should come on normally and then go off.

SO.. After pretty brutal searching of this site.. I have the answer. I will repost here.. though I don't remember who the original posters are!! Forgive me!
1st off....the diagnostic code..
It wasnt 2 long, 2 short... It was actually this pattern:
for the R side side airbag:
1.) On (7 seconds)
2.) off ( 2 seconds)
3.) On (1.5 seconds)
4.) off (.5s)
5.) On (1.5s)
6.) off (2s)
7.) Flash on (very short)
Then it goes back to step 2 and repeats.
If the left one is bad step 7 will occur twice (there will be two short flashes)
This is a TSB item.
Then the reset!
I followed these instructions for the Gen 5.. and it reset my 1998 GLE:
2000-2003 Airbag Light Reset Procedure
If your airbag light is on (or flashing)... try this. By the way, use a stopwatch to count.... the timing must be accurate in order for it to work.
1) Turn IGNITION on (but don't start car)
2) After the AIR BAG warning lamp lights for 7 seconds, turn IGNITION off within 1 second.
3) Wait 4 seconds
4) Turn IGNITION on (but don't start car)
5) After the AIR BAG warning lamp lights for 7 seconds, turn IGNITION off within 1 second.
6) Wait 4 seconds
7) Turn IGNITION on (but don't start car)
8) After the AIR BAG warning lamp lights for 7 seconds, turn IGNITION off within 1 second.
9) Wait 4 seconds
10) Turn IGNITION on (but don't start car)
11) Wait 3 seconds
12) Turn IGNITION off
13) Wait 2 seconds
14) START Car (the light may be blinking slower than before)
15) Wait 3 seconds
16) Turn IGNITION off
17) Wait 3 seconds
18) START Car
Thanks everyone.. I hope this thread helps someone out there!

listen, man..
pushing the door button a bunch of times when you start up (5 time in 7 second) will put you in dignostic mode.
THEN it should be something other than simple flashing.
IF you don't actually have an airbag fault..... you should be able to reset your light. Just like ECU codes.
BUT if you DO have a problem.. obviously your airbag computer will immediately throw a new code.
