Planning to repaint the exterior, myself
My friend just got a new pro spray gun, and i don't like my car color at all, so i'm thinking of re-spraying it.
Don't flame me for this, it might be a stupid question....What i'm wondering about is how hard it will be to do it because neither one of us has experience with this type of stuff, and we don't have access to a real paint booth, so it will have to be in his garage where the equipment is. Will dust be a problem? Is it worth it to do it this way, or should i just keep my not-so-great color?
If i re-spray, im gonna go with jet black BTW...

Eh if its to bad just go get a cheap one at macco and hope you get lucky and get a good paint job. But I really wouldnt risk my FIRST paintjob to be on mine or anyones car. But if you do decide try to practice as much as you can...

This is one of those cases where if you have to ask then you shouldn't be doing it.
What color is your car now? There is some colors i don't like but with the right accesories will look great.
With a 99 i can't imagine the paint being in that bad of shape. Have you tried clay baring it and giving it a nice buff job?

I think its all on the prep work. make sure you prime it. I dont think it should be that hard, just dont overspray so it wont drip. And make sure you really tape off the parts you dont want colored cause that paint will get into everything. As far as dust goes just make sure that there is not a lot of air moving around. You should be fine. My car was painted in a garage.

I agree...if you have to ask then it might not be a good idea. You have no experience at all so I'm positive that it will not come out good at all. Im sure you think the same thing, hence why you posted the question.dont waste your time. Even if you dont really like your color, at least it wont look like $hit.

this is a really big job, thats why it cost $1500-$2500 to get done by a professional. Id leave this job to someone with experience, unless you have a friend with a real sh1tty car that would let you try to paint it....at least then you would be able to judge your skills w/out f#cking up your max. btw, what color is your car thats so bad?

spend more time taping the car up/blocking things u dont want sprayed (such as windows, lights, etc) than actually spraying the car. the better job you do at that the better it will come out. as for the painting, you need a steady hand. and you need to sand it all down first.

First you have to sand, no matter what. Then, you have to prep the body, which means you have to primer it, sand it(many many times) to make sure you get rid of the high and low spots. Than would mean using body filler(in the right way) to even it all out. Spraying it is easy...steady hand. I wouldn't suggest u do all that... it can take between 2 and 3 weeks to do by the way, unless u work on it ALL the time. It's a big job. If you do it, good luck and show me the results. Enjoy

Black paint is going to be a bish for a first timer. Its going to show every imperfection in both the body (unless prepped very well) and in the paint.
Be carefull of orange peel, and paint runs.
Personally, I wouldnt do it.

There is a school called Great Oaks in Cincinnati where they teach auto body repair. I took two night classes there few years ago and re-painted both front and rear bumpers as part of my project, using their paint booth with a LOT of help from my teacher. When I talked with my teacher about the mechanical issues I had then, he suggested that I talk to the teacher who teaches daytime classes, because they (trainee mechanics) are good. You may be able to have them paint your car as part of their projects, and end up paying less than you usually have to.
This is your car and you can do whatever you want of course, but if you would like a paint job with certain level of quality, I suggest that you get some kind of professional assistance.

As someone that has researched and actually done this, I can say that it is certainly DO-able. BUT you will need to do certain things....read as much as you can about actually painting. Buy the right equipment such as a quality respirator, a painters suit, goggles. Then...you have to decide what kind of paint you want to use.
BUY the following:
Sealer
Base
Clear
You will also need hardner with the sealer and the base/clear. I would also advise that you go here and to a lot of research: http://autobodystore.com/forum/index.php
They will have all the advise and necessary things you need there. It is important to use the gun first, before doing your car....learn how it works, learn how to adjust it. MOST importantly don't paint when its HUMID...or your paint will be fubared....don't ask how I know...oh...and you will need ventilation for your garage...get a fan or something in the window...hope that helps...

a color change is tough to do even with a professional doing it....buy like a junkyard trunk and bumper and practice on those before u spray ur car....goto Barnes and Noble and get a good book and read it a few times.....it really all is on the prep work and setting the gun right so u have a nice even spray pattern

Thanks for the replies. As for my current color, i have Pebble Beige, so the change to black will be pretty dramatic. My paint isn't in bad condition besides the hood, where it looks like it's been sanded in one area and spray painted(??). This seems like a very complicated job as i thought it would be. I'll read up on it and see if it's something i want to get into because i wouldnt want to be left with a car thats half *** painted. Maybe some different color would be easier?

it's not really that hard you just need to prep it real good and make sure that all the dents (if you have some) are out cause those will show..i suggest get someone to help you that knows this kind of thing, it be a learning process for you..i painted my own bodykit in my friend's garage with a little help and it's really not that hard, it's pretty fun..

i've seen pictures of a guy who actually painted mutliple cars in his garage with a paint roller and it looked amazing. This is defenitely a toughjob to undertake and will take practice and alot of time.
The paint and supplies along will cost you probably at least $500 and you could get a maaco job for $800 which will be better than your DIY.
