98 GLE AWARENESSes!??..Suggestions?

Good Night my fellow orgers..Well, I found this car in the paper,' 98 Maxima Gle', and they want 2400k for it..The reason why its so cheap is because here in Ct., the value for Maximas are nothing! Any hoot, I was wondering what problems should i be ready to face with this GLE Model..I recently owned a 95 SE and it sucked cause the clutch was going and it had leaks everywhere..But besides that the car ran like a pearl..So, I was wondering if you guys would be able to fill me in with a few problems the gle model might guve me? I know theres a traditional Knock Sensor,o2 sensor, rear strut thing..But besides that what should i look out for?

Please fill me in..Im going to go check the car out tomorrow..

Look for rust. Rust on the exhaust, rust on on the crossmember in front of the radiator, rust on the suspension.

Definitely look for oil leaks if it's a 5 speed - lift the front and wiggle the axle where it meets the tranny - wiggle = needs a tranny rebuild.

Take your $2400, get your 95' SE back, and fix her up =)

On labour cost to change the head gasket, youre better of changing out the engine.

Ct has nothing to do with it's low resale value.
The 190,000 miles is why it's so cheap.

Actually the region does have alot to do with the resale value..Go to kbb.com and compare the values by different state zip codes...

Alright, today I went to go the see the car and its flawless..Of course theres a few nicks here and there on the paint job but which car doesn't have those?..After checking out the exterior I looked under the car to examine the exhaust system..From the front flex to the muffler its rust free. But when it came to the muffler, there was rust but no holes in the exhaust...

By the looks of things I might be purchasing this vehicle either next week or the following week..When I go back what should i do besides drive the car? What should I check this time?

Ps. the seller told me the car was a 98 GLE but when i went there it turned out to be a 96.It wasn't a typo cause i asked him about it and he said he'd check then i showed him the tag that was on his key chain and he said yeah its a 96 in an embarassing way..Is that a sign of disloyalty??

Run the VIN number on Carfax.

See if he has any maintenance records. Especially for coolant, brake fluid, & transmission flushes.
After 200k, most places are really reluctant to change the tranny fluid unless the car's had it done regularly.
Something about being afraid of loosening something that the old built up gunk is holding together or somesuch nonsense.

I change my tranny fluid every 30-40k. Still runs smooth at 224k.

Check the lower cross member under the radiator (you can see it through the lower grill opening). It tends to develop rust in this area of the US.

If the owner lets you, maybe check the spark plug cylinders for any oil leaks.

nothing GLE specific I can think of..
