exhaust system loose?

Hey orgers,

Everytime I go over a bump of some sort, I hear some really bad clunk noises undearneath my car. It sounds like the y-pipe or b-pipe is loose and banging against something. If this is so, can I secure it easily or do I need to get a new pipe? Thanks for any help.

Look under your car. There are two problem spots. Check the hanger/bracket between the Y-Pipe and the main Cat. It could be rusted loose. And also check the cross beam piece right after the resonator on the B-Pipe. Shake the exhaust with your hand, once the exhaust is cool of course. You will hear many noises.

Yeah I have the same problem. My hanger between y and cat is rusted and broke off. I'm also having some crazy bees in the can noise when I accelerate. My muffler is also rusting pretty badly. I'm feeling a new exhuast real soon hopefully.

Yes, you can replace it. But, good luck getting at the rusted bolts. The three exhaust components (Y-Pipe, Hanger, and Cat) are pretty much rusted into one piece right now.

Heat is your friend, and lots of it. Get an acetylene torch on those nuts and bolts and heat them till they glow red. They will twist off like butter once there red hot.

Yea I had that happen. Just took some padding and tied it down on the bar with some thick metal wire just to keep it from banging. I'll be getting a new y-pipe here soon though.

Cheers

Is they're anyway to get Polyurethane exhaust hangers? I know it'll make it feel like the car is shaking but then the exhuast would not move at all.

When you order a budget cat will it come with hangars for the y-pipe -> cat spot, only wondering because I bought one of those y-pipe from CE in the 4th gen classifieds that didn't come with any accessories.

Budget y-pipes dont come with hangers...you really don't even need to use one.

But do Budget Cats? Is there even a hanger between the cat and y-pipe?

yeah, i was pretty much having the same rust problems. the b pipe (i think) more like the shielding on it is starting to wear and expose some of the insulation around the pipe. I decided to replace the whole exhaust. as i understand it, i only need the y pipe and cat back right? i got one of the CE y pipes. Any suggestions on the cat back? anyone know if N1 is any good?

IIRC the N1 exhaust is just a universal muffler. N1 was never a cat-back exhaust for our cars.

Yes, an N1 is just a universal muffler. You'll also need a Catalytic Converter if your redoing the whole exhaust.

It goes: Y-pipe -> Catalytic Converter -> B-Pipe -> Muffler

If you get an N1, CE Y-Pipe, and Cat, you'll still need a B-pipe.

Cat-backs include the B-pipe + Muffler, popular ones are the GReddy SP2, Apexi WS2, Cattman, and Warpspeed Catback (Which is Magnaflow if IIRC)

Hey Al,

It does sound silly
Most likely it's just the B-pipe moving around. Same thing happened to me, till I changed the rubber hanger (stiffer one) & used a coat hanger to hold it from moving.

I would advise against it, and getting something already tested and quality. If you got the CE Y-Pipe from the classifieds your going to need 3 new gaskets from nissan, as well as a new cat, unless your reusing your old one. In that case you'll need new gaskets for that as well

I would too, but at twice the price, I would like to know exactly what the difference is from somebody that has more knowledge on the subject than me. What about Pacesetter and Megan?

While we're on the topic of catback systems for maximas, has anybody had experience with the catback system offered by Warpspeed? my gasket is beginning to leak between my b-pipe and muffler, and also around my cats (warp speed y and resonated test pipe right now..). I figured I'd just replace the whole thing since there's a fair amount of rust on the catback. I was looking at the 2.5" "Q" and also the one with the magnaflow but was wondering about quality, fitment, and sound. I don't mind some deep grumble when I get on the gas but nothing irritates me more then exhaust drone. Just wanted to know if anybody had some opinions on these. Thanks all.

just an update guys, Finlay got rid of that clanking noise. Bear with me I am a horrible typer!

My cat back was making that clanking noise, so i jacked the car up today and inspected the area. I saw that the cat back was hitting, where it goes up and over the dead axle.

This might sound hack, but it worked, and i don't think it is!

What i did was I went to autozone a rubber strap clamp, i wrapped it around the section that was hitting the dead axle and i no longer get that clanking noise.

If you wrapped it around the pipe, the rubber strap will melt!!! =
