Help!! GAS shooting out of tank!!

I tried to fill up my tank two weeks ago and after about 1/2 gallon the gas started shooting out of the tank past the fill nozzle. I chalked it up to the heat wave and figured that I would try a few days later at a cooler time. It has happened every time since then, and the only way to fill it is to go about 1 gal every 3min. Also, I notice that when I unscrew the cap, the gas fumes shoot out like the tank is pressurized.

Any ideas?

Maybe a vent is plugged?

Anyone know where a vent may be - or how to unplug it or test for this theory?

Thanks!!!

I belive that when you open the tank on a hot day thats normal, again my car reeks of fumes so no comment, lol.

I also once had a faulty gas pump that did not stop filling the tank after it was full. Maybe your tank is full. Gas gauges gone bad, dunno just possible problems.

i had the same thing happen to me once, where every the gas nossle handle would not stay locked and after about 10 seconds of filling up, it would start to leak out. I just said f-ck it and didnt gas until the next day, an dthere was no problems after that at all (knock on wood). I know its a really stupid question to ask but just making sure, did you go to a different pump the next time you filled up?? I think that i just had a faulty gas pump

Even if the pump is faulty, the gas wont come back at you, unless it is full. Maybe the guage is broken and your really full?

I suppose if you didnt put the gas cap back on tight, it would keep the system de-pressurized but it would throw a CEL.

It happened multiple times on multiple days, and I am sure the tank was not full. So it is normal to spew out fumes then? It seems like when I capped a full tank - then ran it out - it formed a vacuum in the tank and sucked in.

maybe you should ask multiple questions and see if you get multiple results on your multiple stupid questions?

I don't find the questions stupid, and if the orginal poster accidently clicked create thread a few times big deal, the moderators will fix that. If your car isnt taking gas on a half full tank, something is wrong.

I would guess that you're putting cold gas into a hot tank. There's some vaporization going on which builds up a back pressure to spray the gas out the filler. Only a guess mind you.

I always thought that the gas tank was under negative pressure (partial vacuum) as the inlet manifold sucked all the fumes into the engine to burn them off (and discharge the carbon EVAP cannister)

The pumps have automatic shutoff to prevent this sort of thing so I doubt the tanks full (bad fuel gauge)

It's like feeding your kid brother, you gotta burp the b@st@rd every now and then.

....jus my 2cents worth

I didn't post 2X, or at least not intentionally. I did have to re log-in in the middle of the post so who knows what happened. I am sorry that was so confusing for you "ChristheNite" and "DrTySOUFMaX23". Life must have been cruel to you two...
