how to tell when your fuel pump is bad?

i have a weird problem with the max when it starts. it runs fine, idles fine, everything's fine with it. however, when i start it (especially when the car is warmed up already) it cranks fine then the RPM's drop and it dies. If i give it a tiny bit of gas when i start it, it idles fine as if nothing is wrong. but if i just turn the key without applying any throttle at all, it cranks up fine but doesn't hold the RPM's up there it just lets them drop and die out. Also, simultaneously, the oil pressure light erradically flickers for about 2 seconds on the dash the moment the car starts then stops after a moment when the car is idleing ok. could it be a fuel pump? Nissan seems to think it might be something to do with the oil pressure in the engine but wants to charge me $125 just to test it! I've cleaned the TB and have a brand new IACV. HELP!!!!

When the fuel pump is on the way out you will have surging acceleration while holding the accelerator steady.

Or you could just check your fuel pressure during start up to be sure. 43 psi when at "ON" prior to start and 34 psi after start.

I had to replace the fuel pump and I could hear the pump generating pressure (obviously not enough) and I most certianly did not have any surging when holding the accelerator steady.

Car ran fine once it started... it was just start ups that were a b!tch.

OK.........

Surging is a possible symptom. I eliminated the surging acceleration in my dad's 95 with a low-mileage OEM pump.

This is a frequent problem that many on the ORG have had. I remember finding out about this a couple of years ago. Mine was doing the same thing, but nobody really had any suggestions. The problem was intermittent. I added a second ground wire to my MAF, along with a new grounding point and that seemed to help. I still get it once in a while, but not nearly as often or as bad as I used to.

Oh I don't doubt you at all. I just want to throw the start up pressure level out there in case he has no surging.

This would not likely be a factor upon startup. The valve isn't being used at this point, I don't believe.
