Speedometer stoped working

Alright well my speedometer just stopped working this week and also the cruise control. Any body have any clues as to what caused it? There are no codes as my check engine light has not come on yet, so I am guessing it is not the VSS sensor. I have had codes for other things such as knock sensor and crankshaft sensor that I have fixed so I know the light on the dash is not burned out and is functional for the codes. Car is 95 Maxima SE, w/auto.

Anybody?

I've had both problems and just got a donor cluster and switched them out.

It's probably a dead cluster - bad electrical connection somewhere inside. Replacement is another option - if you're interested in an SE cluster (white gauges) with 125k, send me a PM.

I have the spare cluster because my speedo / odo died, but I also got the VSS code. It turns out my cluster was fine, and my VSS was shattered inside the tranny All better now though.

My friend had the opposite happen in his 96. His speedo stopped working and he got the VSS code. So he replaced the VSS with no results... even the code remained. He finally put in the new speedo and cleared the ecu and he was back in business.

If you follow the VSS code procedure, you will be checking both the sensor and the gauge cluster. FYI

Correct. That is the way it is detailed in my FSM. But he's the type that like to replace parts first, ask questions later.

I have a similar problem...need an opinion

I have an intermediate speedometer problem, when it doesn’t work all I have to do is go over 60mph and the gage jumps up. This problem is gradually getting more frequent for the past two years. The check engine light is not on and from reading everything I can’t decide if I need to change the speed sensor or the cluster. Also, I checked and the cruise control doesn’t work when speedometer is not working. I know this not a big deal but it gets annoying after a while. Anyone has any ideas?
