Window Tinting - Has anyone in PA ever been ticketed for 20%?

I'm finaly having my windows tinted, but decided to contact the local police station. The officer said that the "law" for sun screening is 70% of the light must pass thru the window film/tint. The way this seems to correlate with the tint value is that I would need to put 70%tint or higher. Now, most vehicles I see have closer to 20%, which is what I was gonna do.

Has anyone in PA, or other states, ever been ticketed for 20% tint?

It really depends on where in PA you are. I know in the Lehigh Valley area, I've been fine with 20% tint all around, and my friend with 5% only got one warning..and you'll probably get a better response in the local forums.

area is a huge part of it. Being that like you said 70% is the darkest in PA they are well within their right.

I have 2.5% extreme limo tint on my 99. I put it on 4 years ago and haven't had and trouble so far but I also have military tags so maybe that's why ??? The only time I worry in going through road blocks and then I just open the sunroof and roll the front windows down. I live in Knoville TN

Knoxville is not PA, in case you ever took geography. Tinting laws are state-based rules, and enforcement is even more disorganized.

If you want to know, call PennDOT in Harrisburg. These are the people who can answer it. Or call a tinting shop - if they dont' know the law, then they're retartded. Now whether they install 'illegal' tint levels, surely that's another matter.

If you ask me, tinting the windscreen and side windows is dangerous practice. While you might think it's ghetto cool, other drivers and pedestrians can't tell if you're looking up or down or at the floor.

Thanks!

Thanks all for the input .. you all make good points. First off, my bad for not putting this in regional forum ...

I decided to go with 15% tint all around .. HAH! I did call PEN DOT and got the specs, and the bottum line is, anything that is legal tint to do here in PA, is not a tint shade worth having done, so, if I get pulled, I get pulled, but it does look MUCH MUCH NICER!

Thanks again fellas!

In any "real" cities, they leave you alone, NJ I always got off with a warning. This past April Upper Providence (west of philly) I got a $104 ticket for "unlawful activities" I was going to fight it, but I moved and the cost to fight it (ie travel) is more than the ticket. But in the 3 plus years of having 10%, no other problems.

The only difference here is that I didn't put that on, and bought the car in florida. I think it's a bad idea to tint your windshield other than the top, but the side window tint is great while driving at night, it really cuts down the glare of the mirrors from trucks and what not.

And maybe since I have only lived in the near the cities, but my opinion is different. I think that if people actually know where you're looking they tend to do things like cut you off and walk out in front of you, they shouldn't rely on seeing you, because in big trucks they can't, and a big truck is far more dangerous on the road than a maxima.

I think Cops have more important things to do than to give ticks for extra tint and higher capacity headlights.
