On 17 Aug 2006, 200 Canadian dollar(s) = 179.14 U.S. dollar(s), at an exchange rate of 0.8957 (using nominal rate.)

I'm thinking about it...

Noob Question: What is a test pipe? What are the gains? Is it loud?

Page 2 of the 4th Gen Modifactions FAQs:

How can I get more power from my Maxima?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Y-pipe - An aftermarket Y-pipe is the best bang for the buck power upgrade for the Maxima. You can see gains of 10-15 HP just by replacing the stock Y-pipe. The stock Y-pipe contains two pre-cats and many restrictive bends, a smooth flowing aftermarket pipe is a huge improvement. Technically replacing your y-pipe is illegal (in most states) because it removes emissions equipment, but since the pre-cats are only necessary until the main cat warms up you should pass emissions testing if your car is warmed up first. Prices range from $200-400 and are available from Warpspeed Performance, Cattman Performance, Budget, and Stillen. There are many opinions on what company is best, search and decide for yourself.

I've got the Budget Y and B pipe with a 14" Magnaflow resonator and stock muffler. I get very stock noise levels and when you punch it you get a nice growl.

The ypipe gives about 20hp and the b-pipe give about 8-10. Check the exhaust section for clips of how it sounds. It gives the car a nice low tone growl.

I pass emissions inspection with flying colors all the time.

The stock B pipe is pinched to half of the pipe diameter right after the resonator.

No pay attention to what my first post says. I asked what a test pipe is (not a y-pipe), if it gaves gains, or makes a louder noise. You told me it replacest the cat, but I would like more info.

You weren't specific. This is a Y pipe thread, you know.

Ok I'll ease your pain. You'll gain maybe 1 hp with the test pipe.

As for noise, if you go with a straight through muffler with the Budget Y and 14" resonated B and stock cat it will get stupid, reverberating noisy at 2500rpm +. Having the test pipe in wouldn't make that much difference. Been there, done that.

I'm investigating whether going to a 20" resonator will help quiet things down.
