Does anyone know to diagnose a defective MAF sensor?

I DO NOT have any check engine lights on. I was informed that a defective MAF sensor may be related to my extremely poor city gas mileage (about 11 m-15 miles per gallon in the city and driving it like my grandma) I can get 400 plus miles on the highway on a full tank with 600 + lbs doing 85+ mph with my A/C on.
I dont have another MAF to swap it out with so I was wondering if there are any tests that can be done.
The car has had new NGK plugs whithin the last 6 mnths (model just like the originals) new Nissan fuel, air filter, Denso rear 02 sensor and the trottle body was cleaned.I've also been using the Techtron (or Chevron something like that) fuel injector cleaner.

Hopefully someone can help me to diagnose and resolve this issue otherwise I'll have to sell it (97 MaxSE Auto VLSD).

Any help/input will be very much appreciated.

One.

Put car in Neutral and give gas, If RPM doen't go above 2500 you may have problem with MAF or MAF wiring.

I think I remember a thread a while back in which someone said they cleaned the thin wire inside MAF with a cotton swab and alcohol(?) and supposedly that helped the throttle response.
