Looks like a nightmare. Might need to replace about 80% + of your exhaust system.....

In that case, break off part of the shield from the catalytic converter so it rattles.

i was kidding before, but i have the rust hanging off my muffler just like it is on your cat. i just rip it off as it peels. i'll probably get down there one day, rip off as much as i could, sand down the areas where the peeling stops and blast it with a few coats of high temp black paint

It really doesn't look as bad at you think. Until it sounds differently then you need one.

Yours looks better then mine except the muffler. That the only thing that been replaced since 97. My hanger broke right there and the heat sheilds are rusting I already ripped them all off. The back of the b-pipe is falling off, already ripped that piece off to. So now there is just insulation and whatever behind that

Just look at this. Click to enlarge

Just pull off that insulation stuff hangin there, replace the muffler, and you're all set.

Yeah rust is to be expected in an older car. It happens and yours might look bad but if it doesnt sound bad its not a problem. But i guess your just trying to guilt your dad into buying you a full exhaust system? Hah good luck with that one. Just say its an early christmas present. Instead of a ps3 your getting new exhaust. Prob cheaper to get exhaust anyway.
