overdrive off light button not working

i have a 1997 maxima purchased new, my overdrive light is not working and the transmission "sticky" when you first start off in drive but not reverse. i took it to a nissan dealer and was told that i needed a "traction control module" which would cost me 875.00 for that part. i did a self diag with the check eng. light method and got the codes 0804 and 0504 which both mean
"auto trans. control unit control signal to ecu"
HELP, what is a traction control unit and where is it on the car

thanks,
billhen

I'd look through the 4th Gen Stickied threads to see if this has been addressed before, and also post this question in the right forum for more responses, but since you can't start a new thread yet, use this:
