How To: Remove Pinstripes

Usual i am not repsonsible blah blah blah have fun:

Using the below method i did my entire car in twenty minutes per side. Twenty Minutes!. Four people (counting myself) can barely tell the car even had pinstripes, and thats about an inch away from the paint. The only line left over is where the two front fenders come together, not much you can do about that.

1) Park your car so that the first side you are going to remove is in direct sunlight. Let the car stand for about 10 minutes like this.
2) Grab a can of Naptha*** and some shop towles.
3) Put some Naptha on one of the corners of a shop towel, and rub it over the first 6inches to a foot of the pinstripe. You want to do this at one of the ends, and 6in-1ft in. You dont have to rub hard, just go over 4-5 times.
4) Take a credit card, license, etc, and peel up the first inch. I say use the CC because it will bring the two lines up evenly, whereas your fingers may not.
5) Grab the two peeled up lines and slowly start peeling back. Not too slow but not at break neck speeds. Also be sure to pull in the direction you are going close to the body, because a too severe angle is going to break the tape.
6) Now that the stripe is off take Naptha and wipe off remaining residue.
7) Move on to the next side.

All of my pinstripe came off in one peice in a matter of seconds using this method, on both sides. If yours is cracked it is going to break off and you will need to keep starting again.

NOTE***: Naptha responds differently too all paint, even if its the same finish/color/etc of mine. Always test in a low visibility area (example, under a bumper) to make sure it is not going to damage your paint.

Enjoy!

Those are those ugly, thin vinyl strips that run along the length on the side of the car (if your car came equipped with them installed). Most people remove them because they look horrible on a Max. I believe if you have them, they were most probably installed by the dealer or whoever sold the car at one time.

As a side note, there is no line or seam in the front. Its actually the glue but it was so hard that i thought it was a line. I will be removing that shortly.

This method "burns" off the pin stripe, which can be rough on paint and is much more likely to leave marks. And is actually, in most cases, slower.

I took off my pin-stripes and de-badged the car using a professional heat gun. Work wonders only took me 4 1/2 hours for the pin-stripe...LoL! But i guess it's worth it. If you'd like I also posted a few pics in the Members ride section.

Anyone try Goo-Gone? Stuff worked great when I took off the lettering off my truck.

I just took the pin stripes off the Max yesterday afternoon. Left it in the hot TX sun all day then peeled it off with my finger nails + ccard. Used WD-40 to loosen it up then rub off the bits of adhesive left behind, worked great. Just make sure to do it in the hot sun (or use a heat gun)! As I was working it was cooling off and got cloudy, so the last bit took me about 3x longer and was an absolute pain...took a little under 2 hours, would have finished about 30 minutes faster if I had sun/heat the whole time.

Goo-Gone works really well on that stuff too. Just put some of that on a rag and scrub it until you can start peeling it off. Just be sure to wax it when youre done cause that stuff removes the wax job.
