Front + rear. Those clips that go on each caliper you can buy new so you dont get squeaks and misc noises. They run about 20$ a wheel. To me, its worth it since my old ones were worn out bad.

Brakes are no place to be cheap. If you've got something disassembled and you find a worn out part, go ahead and replace it. Otherwise it might bite you in the ***.

I replaced them once already.

Once the shims start peeling the paint off and rusting, time for new ones. No better way to avoid brake squeal than OEM shim hardware.

there's an updated part available to replace the original HW clips. the new ones have springs that actively push the pads out away from the rotor. you install them onto the calliper. with these you do not need shims. they cost $20 per axle. I've got them on the back w/out shims and everything works/sounds like it should. I'll find the part # and post it tomorrow.

yours wears down that fast? I'm under the impression they can last a few good years. I wonder if its treated with something it can last longer and endure the heat. Like high temp enamel or something.

here's the new spring retainer that replaces the original brake HW. you have to remove the old pad retainers, sand down/clean the area on the torque member where the clip into, and press the new ones in place (they also have adhesive on the back to help hold them).
the Nissan part no. is 44083-4U025. you should be able to get them for about $20 per axle. I have them on the back only, but I assume they will work fine for the front as well. with these you do not need shims....

Man, I wish I could find this for a '04 Maxima. I called NAPA, Pep Boys, Oreilly and Autozone, no one has it. The only one left is the dealer.
