I've searched the stickies and yahoo, etc. and have only found things on STS and people shortening their auto shifters. but i know i've seen it b4. as a new owner of a 5 speed im interested in just making the 5 speed shifter sit lower. im not interested in buying a sts, just interested in cutting this one lower. anyone have any idea how to do it? is it as simple as just removing the trim and just sawing it lower?? if thats true should i saw off the top or bottom?? yeh, im new to this 5 speed stuff, my first stick shift ever!! anyones help or experience would help..thanks

yeah just unscrew the **** and cut off how ever much you want off, and stick the **** back on with some super glue. you have to do that because you will end up cutting off the threads. i took about 3in out of mine, the shifter effort is higher, but once you get used to it, its pretty cool

Mine has been cut for about 7 months now, and i still love it as much as i did the first day after i cut it. Acidspit86 gave good directions, except i used an aftermarket **** because the stock GXE **** is just too ugly/cheap feeling. You don't want to cut it so much that the two little ***** on the shifter won't allow you to fit your shiftknob on. Once you take everything apart, you'll know what i mean.

If you want to do it "correctly" then you'll probably need to have it rethreaded as well, but that sounds like it's more of a hassle than you're looking for.

i cut the shifter in my old car, i did it the more proper way, cut about 2 inches off and re threaded the shifter. I was contemplating doing it on this car, but basically its an mod that if you dont like it then your screwed.

Just buy an Aftermarket Momo **** and it fits right on the cut shifter.

I was going to cut mine and rethread it but you'd need to grind it down before you rethread it because no threading kit will cut it down that much, my opinion just get a no name one off of ebay their only like 20 bucks plus s/h.

Is there a great difference between a no name one and a brand name one? I mean it's a freaking metal rod...

The weight of the **** seems to have a pretty good effect, shape also, but you can definatly find a good no-name that has good shape and weight. I like heavier ones myself.

yes. people have snapped them in half while driving, believe it or not.

stop being cheap, all of you and just buy a real sts.

the only point of cutting the stock shift is for looks, cus it definately doesn't give you a shorter throw..

The 1st time I cut about 1.5" off, decide that wasn't enough for the Momo **** I put on which doesn't require the shifter to be threaded, I cut off another 1" better to take off a bit at a time as there's no going back. All done with a hacksaw. At that point I had to file down the width of the shifter to get the **** over, I highly recommend buying the **** you are going to go with first as they are all different sizes, when I sold the car I took off the expensive MOMO **** ( see pic) and threw on a cheap one (which was considerably shorter than the MOMO) the whole shifter end up too short IMO, that's why I'd recommend picking out the **** you want. Pretty much all after market ***** don't require threading they usually have tiny little allen head screws with points on the ends that screw into the side of the shifter. BTW in the two years I had the cut down shifter I never had any problems and enjoyed it much more.
