Repairing CV Boot: Cost Estimates?

I don't have the time or the resources to repair the CV boots (left and right wheel). As a result i was curious what other members have paid or have been estimated so i can get a ball park idea for what to expect.

Also looking for a shop in the Bay Area, any advice is great!

Cheers,
-B

Like he said above, new axle will cost about $60~$70. I have a bad Passenger side CV. Estimate labor & parts $200-$250...That is in Memphis, TN...It is pricy, but worth it if you have never done it before.....make sure you take it to a reputable place.

while you're at it, replace both of them. I have a 1996 Maxima GXE and the driver side went out few weeks ago, made all kind of noise when turning so I replaced both axle, local mechanics charged me $350 for parts and labor.

I am getting mine done today on my 2K maxima at http://www.mijusa.com/

They are good honest folks, I always get the big thingys done by them.

Labor cost is $180 per side and parts cost $30 per side.
I am looking at a bill of $400 (with AAA discount of 10%).

Good luck.

I was actually leaning towards changing the axle becoz one fine day the inner boot (which incidently doesn't have much play like the outer boots) would wear out and would spend more. Then I called up DaveB and he told me the axles have gone up in prices and was close to $500 a piece. After hearing that my jaw dropped and went ahead replacing the outer boots (EMPI those that go into Infinity vehicles) for now.

Called Midas for an estimate; $250 for parts and labor for replacing the whole axle. Sounds like a fair deal... except for its Midas.

Edit: 250 a side

Finally with all the discounts my bill was $350!!!
The good part is I don't have to think about this for a very long time...real peace of mind that my axle is still intact!!!

It's fairly easy to do it.

I did my outer boots @275K km and it cost $12 per 1 piece boot and grease comes with the boot, only outers usually need replacing. You can also opt to install a 2 piece boot but that is if you are not going to keep the car.

I'd love to do it myself but unless someone in my areas offers their garage and tools its just easier to spend the cash and get it done in a day.

They just quoted me at $350 a side for a brand new and $300 a side for a remanufactured one. Did you talk to anyone in specific, 'cause $200 more than yours seems a little fishy.
Thx

I changed only the boots and not the axles. The boots + labor cost me $350.

ouch you got plowed. But I really can't say much, as I took mine to a Nissan dealer last year when I didn't have time to do it myself. Cost $200/axle parts, total was like $900. Now I get to redo the job anyway b/c the stupid tranny seal is leaking b/c they didn't replace it.

Well it all comes to the same, in your case axles cost $400 ($200 *2) and labor $500. In my case parts were $50 and labor $300. Remember when you change the boots, the whole axles has to come out, it is essentially more work to replace the boots than to replace the axle in its entirety.

So $350 seems OK to me!!!

Got both front boots replaced, joints cleaned and repacked with grease for $150.
I'm good for another 120K miles.

It's a real messy job, I would have done it myself but....
Parts are only about 30 bucks.
