Help!!! car shuts off after being put in gear

This may be a noob question but its bothering me

This morning when i turned my car on, it turned on perfectly. But when i put it in reverse the rpms went way down and the car shut itself off... I turned the car on again and waited a little bit and the same thing happened... Then i put it in drive and it happened again...

So i said the hell with it and took my dads car to school

When i got home i got in it and it turned on perfectly again... this time when i put it in reverse the rpms dropped but it didnt turn off the rmps kinda bounced around like it was going to turn off... I made it out of the drive way and put it in drive, i pressed on the gas and my rpms wouldnt go about 1000... I floored it and the rpms slowly went to 2000 and evenutually up to 3500. Turned the corner and once again floored it, this time it was goign at 2000 and then all of a sudden took off and redlined and now it drives like a champ again...

It seems that this happens every month or so. I've changed the fuel filter and oil recently...

Any suggestions?

Thanks
JRev

I had same behavior on my maxima last month.
It turned out to be open MAF sensor connector (at least i hope so).
If you have done some work near maf area recently check thats maf is working.
