Cleaning Battery Corrosion

Hey guys my aunt's battery is corroding pretty bad and the mechanic says that it needs servicing. Instead of paying $20 I rather do it for her. The thing is, I don't know how . Can anyone tell me how? And is there some sort of red grease to put around the terminals to prevent further corrosion? Thanks.

D/C the battery (duh) get some baking soda and water, mix it up and clean battery terminals with a wire brush. You can also do this to the connector parts of the battery cable. To prevent further corrosion there is some steel wool kind of rings that you can put around your batery terminals, goto autozone or some store, they will know what your talking about.

baking soda and water works well, so does coca-cola actually. it eats through it like its nothing. there is a red grease that you can put on the terminal, i use one by crc.

if one of the wires is corroded inside it might just come back even though you clean it, that was the case with mine couple of months ago

At almost any automive store they should sell battery post cleaners. It is a cylinder that fits over the post with a wire brush inside and the cap comes off and there is a wire brush for the connectors. Also get the felt like rings for the battery posts.

Buy a dedicated batter corrosion cleaner. Stuff is cheap, spray on, and has a corrosion inhibitor. Use a battery terminal brush too. I've done this many times on diesel truck batteries (4 - 6 large batteries per vehicle) and have never had problems with corrosion coming back.

Just run your own ground wires, I'm about to do this myself. You can use 10 gauge but i'm not playing games so i'll be doing the 0/1 AWG. I'm just having trouble finding the right copper connectors for the cable, if someone might know where i can buy such big connectors...

I went to an autoparts store and ask mechanics there to clean and spray those corrosion protector for free. It's pretty easy work, just ask nicely.

Wheel cleaner eats that stuff up too. Spray some on the battery terminals next time you wash your car then hose it off. Grease up the terminals to keep them clean. WD-40 works great at preventing corrosion.

Don't believe everything you see on TV. Try it for yourself. Coke or Pepsi (regualr or diet, I've found) will eat off battery corrosion. It won't prevent future corrosion, but it will clean it off when you have it.

Vaseline works wonders...keeps them clean for months...but you gotta check it every so often, just like everything else.

I agree with all of the above. Bi Carb soda, or soda ash and warm water works best it just dissolves off. Then spray your terminals with CRC, WD40, Inox or lanotec, or even fish oil, you can even use plain ordinary grease.
