Hey,

I called Mr. Martin's attention becasue he seems to have the most knowledge concerning highly technical questions, but anyone is free to answer, and I appreciate all input. I have a few extra dollars, and after being inspired by F&F I'd like to do an engine swap in my maxima. I am thinking that a 300ZX twin turbo engine, or a supra TT engine. What are my options as far as what will fit, and about how much time/money am I looking to do this transaction. Thanks.

I really dont think you can fit a supra engine in a maxima
Ohh and the 300zx is a rear wheel drive car so your looking to spend much money. Just get a SC
Or you can do a search to find more info

Okay...Any other engines that may fit? And how hard would it be, and what would be involved to make the Max AWD?

you really dont need another engine, just supercharge it. There has been talk that you could fit the new 02 maxima engine in , but we all dont know how true this is. Your best bet is to add a spuercharger or build the motor.
Awd??? Ahh might as well just get a whole new car.

wow, Supra TT or 3Z TT motor? AWD? man you dream big. ANything is possible with money. Id say your lookin at upwards of 15k as a starter. Not to metion you have to find a really really good shop to do it and dont expect to be trouble free either. your better off buying one of those cars and modding it up.

I'm responding only because you called out my name in the Subject line. My principal interest is diagnosis and repair of stock Maximas. The twin-turbo engine has been discussed in this forum several times before and the concensus has been it won't fit. I think the sensible path to follow is installing a VQ35DE engine, working out the bugs, and then adding a supercharger.

Make a plan

Just how few are your "few extra dollars"? It's a good idea to start with a careful plan. Establish a horsepower goal and make a list of the different ways you might achieve that goal. Then do your homework, pricing out each of the plans. This will help you decide what you want to do, and what you can afford to do. Please bear in mind that an engine swap is much more than "remove old engine, bolt in new engine". You may have to transplant a lot of expensive electronics from the donor vehicle (Engine Control Module, various sensors, and the wiring which connects them). In addition to dollars, make realistic estimates of downtime. If the work will take five weeks, can you get along without the car for all that time?

The Z engine will probably not fit. However, here are two options if you want to swap (these are my opinion, and most will require the complete engine including ECU and harness...I haven't done any and they are speculation).

1. VQ35DE from a Pathfinder. The 5sp Pathfinder puts out 250hp. Supercharge that with a Stillen Supercharger.

2. Turbo manifold from a VQ30DET. Those weren't available in the US, but I've seen it in Nissan literature. I believe JWT experimented with this on a '96 Maxima and had a tough time getting everything to fit right since the engine sits longitudinally in the orignal application.
