Robotic antenna question....

I am a proud owner of a 1999 Max GLE (canadian) and when i purchased it the antenna was always visible so i thought to myself, i can probably make it go all the way in so it's not visible anymore, but it just extends more when i press the FM button, is there something wrong with it or is it just made like that? because around here i have seen maximas with their antennas all the way in so i was just wondering how can i do the same thing?

You need to replace the antenna mast. Just take off the nut and have someone turn on the radio and just pull the mast out. To replace the old one feed the plastic cable into the hole and have them turn the radio off then replace the nut and your done.

Is there a specific reason why my antenna stopped working after i had a new headunit installed? I always kind of liked the "robotic" nature of having my antenna go up and down.

Sounds like you forgot to hook up the turn on wire that lets the antenna know that the radio is on.

yep...i remember when Best Buy F*cked up my bro's accord- they hooked it up so it would go up when he turned the radio off.

the antenna mast is what most people refer to as the antenna. the mast is two or more hollow rods that slip inside one another. In the power antenna rods is a bendable, coilable plastic rod that is toothed on one side. the teeth allow for a gear on a motor (the power of 'power antenna') to uncoil (extend) the antenna or recoil (retract) the antenna. where the antenna meets the car exterior is a fitting with two small slots, you need to remove this fitting to remove the antenna mast. i used needlenose pliers spread and inserted into the fitting and turn counterclockwise to remove. after the fitting is off, when you turn on the radio the antenna will extend, make sure to notice which side the teeth are on. pull out the old antenna and plastic rod, the plastic coilable rod is longer than the extended aluminum antenna. insert the new plastic rod keeping in mind the side the teeth are on. turning off the radio will then coil the plastic rod and retract the antenna. recap when done. i would look online at pictures of replacement units to get a better idea for visuals. hope this helps.
