quick y-pipe question

I looked under my car to see why my y-pipe was rattling, turns out I am missing 3 of the six nuts holding it in. I guess we didn't tighten them down good enough, and/or it has something to do with when I ran up on an embankment while sliding on some ice awhile back. I was just wondering if I need to use lock washers under the nut, I can't tell because the current ones are a little rusted. Any help is appreciated.
