Motor Oil question
Motor Oil question
so i just got my maxima she has about 61 000 miles on her and it's soon due for an oil change, called the dealership and they told me it would cost 31.95 CDN and we couldnt find a time hole so i could come in and do the change, so they said that i could do it anywhere else (NO **** SHERLOCK) and when i asked what kind of oil they used, they said it was 5w30 Esso Mineral (ie: NOT SYNTHETIC) they said it didnt matter synthetic or mineral it allcame up to about the same
so 2 questions about that
1 is it true that it doesnt matter what sort it is (mineral or synthetic)?
2. Does it have any impact on the ponies your car develops?

It does matter what type of oil.
Certain oils ressist break down, and wearing of moving parts. Its not a horsepower type of thing, its more of a maintain a healthy engine kind of thing.
A question you'll soon be bumbarded with is, why have the dealer change the oil? I'm sure there are many small shops around that should change the oil for extremely cheap.
I would say its even faster and cheaper to do yourself, but you may not have the tools/space/time/or desire to do it.

i just called the dealer because they usually know what the best type of oil i need to use for my particular car, but they recomended mineral oil for it... so i am kidna confused i mean what do you guys use as motor oil?
PS: I'd change it myself but i live in a dinky appartment building, and the landlord doesnt let anyone work on their cars in his parking lot, i understand that tho, he doesnt want his parking lot stained, so i just go to smalls hops to change my oil....
anyone have any motor oil to recommend me?

Catrol GTX is an excellent oil. (I use 10w-30)
I enjoyed Mobile Oil also but Catrol is superior.
you could go into an auto store and pretty much an 5w-30 oil would suffice. I'd recomment Castrol GTX.

Mobil 1 5-30
or
German Castrol (make sure it says made in germany on it) 0w-30
Or since your in canada, call your local esso dealer and order a case of 0w-30 esso XD-3, that stuff is cheap and good.
Good luck

As kcryan says, since you live in Canada, go to your Esso bulk plant/commercial card lot and buy Esso Extra XD3, 0w30, PAO, full synthetic. Double check that it is Extra and not the dino/mineral oil you are buying. You can't get this synthetic oil in stores or gas stations.
I have been running it in my 95SE since February. I ran Castrol GTX 5w30 before for the most part and I'm not going back to it.
If you don't want to go the synthetic oil route, go with the Castrol GTX 5w30.
Stick with a Nissan OEM oil filter. Do not use Fram or any of the filters the lube joints try and flog you.
It is somewhat problematic to get Purolator PureOne oil filters in Canada at a reasonable price and Napa Gold aren't much cheaper than Nissan OEM filters.

Yes it is. You would notice improved startup on cold days with the 0w and your engine would get up to operating temperature sooner. The 30 relates to viscosity at operating temperature. At operating temperature the XD3 is a heavier oil than most traditional 30 weights.
