why is my temp gauge doing this..

my temperature gauge keeps on going above normal and back....
when i come to a light it goes up (not all the wat to H, but close) then when i start driving again it goes back to normal.... there is coolant in my radiator..

does anyone know what might cause that....

yes!

1. the radiator is probably blocked. (myne was at least 65% blocked and i had to either clean it or buy a new one - i opted for a new two row radiator from radiator barn.

2. thermostat - i forget the signs ie diag of a thermostat - i had just bought one from autozone when i put my new radiator on - 220k miles and it was never changed.

3. fans not spinning or they are not spinning at the CORRECT speed, but look like they are working.

you will have to find out. myne would heat up no matter what when it got to hot, then i had to turn on the heat full blast econ. after not doing anything for a while i would feel massive heat on my feet just for no reason then after awhile it would overheat. the first signs of this happening to me was with the air conditioning on, in stop and go traffic. your problem is simular but may not be the same, so thats why i listed three issues to look at and diag yourself.

cheap thermostats can be found anywhere, www.radiatorbarn.com for radiators, and im not sure about the fans, they are expensive and i seen some on ebay for cheap from respectable buyers.... check the group buy section for some stuff too - someone had a radiator deal.

double check to make sure you have enough fluid in ur radiator system and that resevior box.... i had the same exact thing happen to me a few weeks ago. I checked and was indeed low. I am running at my normal temp again.

Hey, other than the thermostat, and assuming your radiator isn't shot. When did you last add fluid to your radiator? This happened to me, when I installed a new 350 engine in my monte carlo SS, If your radiator was very low on fluid and you added a whole bunch, you can create an air pocket in the engine, and the fluid will not circulate as it should. So, if you recently added fluid, drain it all, and when you go to add more, do so very slowly. This should fix the problem if it is an air pocket. Good Luck.

check the radiator cap it might be bad causing pressure to not build up... also check to see if the level in the radiator overflow changes..

just look at the radiator for something that might look like a birds nest or massive dirt buildup.
