I poped up the hood today to check some stuff and for some reason i put my hand on the fender but i didn't mention that the hood was going down slowly......all i remember that 3 of my fingers stuck between fender and fully locked hood and here's the result after about 3 hours

Lesson learned(too late) beware guys fingers worh more than 100$

Doesn't look too bad, from the looks of it you are missing only 2 fingers.

Well that $1.50 piece of wooden dowel hasn't collapsed yet. And it works in wind too.

If you're hood struts aren't blown already, clamping vice grips on is the fastest way to screw them up. I know cause the idiot I let change my clutch put vice grips on cause he was scared it would collapse, and that scratched the shaft of the struts up and messed up the seal. I was standing there and all the sudden oil just started gushing out of the struts cause he did that.
But once they're blown... vice grips are the way to go!

im still using vice grips as well, sorry about your fingers, i thought you were meaning the hood slamped on your hands and you were stuck for 3 hours? that would have been totally lame !

i think my hood weighs around 45 lbs, one day it may get me, but for now im still to cheap to buy hood struts. I ask about them all the time but people want to much. Then you here people saying stuff like . I just about new hood struts and a few months later they arent working. personally i dont know what to believe because mine are something like 9 years old.

some creative org memeber come up with some new space age design or something?

I've been using vice grips for two years now and I haven't seen any reason to replace my hood struts

As for replacing the struts, I asked my brother. He's a mechanic for a BMW, but has worked on some Nissan vehicles in the past. He says that the Nissan OEM struts last longer than the generic brands (don't know how much longer, didn't ask). He said the generic ones are fine, but you'll replace them sooner, so I guess you get what you pay for.

damm!! sorry man...my friend had a softball injury on his right hand, and after a week or so he learned to shift and drive with his left hand!! tho, most of the times he took the pain of shifting with his right..but it was pretty cool.

i bought my struts from ebay..about $20-$30.. so far so good.. but changed them early this summer. other's say autozone or advanced auto has lifetime warranty on their products..about $20/each side.

lol I was grounding my starter today and as I was over the bay unscrewing something I noticed the hood on my landing on my head. It was slow so it didnt hurt but I was confused at first. Then realized the struts or whatever have failed.

The worse is doing something like the rear sparks, leaning over the front bumper, and having the hood latch stab u in the back.

Unless you're into showing off your engine bay at car shows, a old, cut-off broom stick works just fine. And it fits nicely into the trunk when I'm not using it.

Sorry to hear about your fingers. Did you fracture any of them?

I finally gave in and bought some a while back at Pepboys. Those puppies are still working great.
