I'm planing on just buying a pair of new tires, but I want to get some thing with a wider tread. The tires I have on now are 205/65/R15 all around, and the tires I would like to get on the rear are 225/60/R15 (they would be the same brand os the tires in front). Can I do this??? How would the car look with these wider tires on the rear?? How would the car handle??? I'm thinking on doing this because the tread on my rear tires is getting thin and I've got a road trip soon!!!

you're probably safer with a 215/60r15... the more important thing is the tire, not the size. a good 205/65r15 can easily out stick a cheap 225/60r15.

look for tires with at least an H rating. almost all tires with an 'H' speed rating are rated Temperature A and Traction A, which measures the tires ability to dissapate heat and stop in a straight line. Most W or Y speed rated tires are rated AA in Traction, which will stick even more.

when pushed hard.. your car will understeer.. I wouldn't recommend it. this condition could be dangerous on long wet curving off-ramps etc. You car will also rotate differently when you jerk the wheel.. It will take getting used to. Basicly you shouldn't do it because all the weigh is in the front of the car.. not the back.

Zum is right, and you're not RWD, so you can't pull your tail around as easily w/ the wider tires on the back.

I stepped up to the 215/60 15" tires on my steel wheels and noticed a big difference in handling; especially with grip when cornering. The body still rolls like crazy, but the tires stick, and they have yet to squeal in protest on the entrance/exit ramps. I'm about to fatten them up to 225/60 15"s when I get my car back from the shop (new front end...2 more weeks!). But it will be all 4 tires. The "bulge" on the 215's isn't that noticable...I actually think it looks just a bit more aggressive than the stock 205's.

 

Why bother? As forementioned, the car understeers badly in stock form so adding a wider rear tire section will just make it understeer even more.

 

What if I put the wider tires up in front???? Any ideas guys??

it'll understeer less. Just use a bigger rear sway to make the car handle more neutral and stick with the same size tires on all four corners

 

O.k! It seems that I'm going to have to change all four tires!!!
