#$&@&^$^!! idle issue

Seems these days a lot of us are having idle problems. I've ran into one on mine that wasn't giving a CEL. Cleaned my air filter, MAF sensor, and IAC.

Even though the CEL wasn't on, I decided to check it for codes. Pulled 0603 - cylinder 6 misfire. So, I replaced the coil. Still the bad idle (putt putt putt putt). I then replaced the fuel injector (that was a piece of cake). And STILL, putt putt putt putt every 1 minute or so. The hole car feels like it's listening to a Usher song (whomp whomp whomp whomp) while the engine goes (putt putt putt putt).

I'm hearing a strong vaccume sound which I've recorded here. It's an AVI movie. Towards the end, you can hear the 'putt putt putt putt' and then it goes away. The engine goes up and down with it.

I'm at my witts end. It's not throwing any more codes, and I'm getting ready to take a hammer to it.

WTF is left for me to replace?

Ya know... I hate to even suggest this, because I could be totally blowing smoke, but that sounds a lot like a broken wire or two. Could it be the same Engine Control Harness I think is broken on mine? Mine's throwing a P0500.

Replacing the thing costs too much; repairing it looks pretty scary (I'm still working up the courage). But that could be it.

Couldn't distinguish anything except for the vaccum sound in the video. (I'm using a SB sound card and Sennheiser headphones too.)

I'm no mechanic so I can't really help you. Did you check your 6th cylinder spark plug?

Hey mike and enervine. Thanks for the advice. EnervinE, yeah... brand new plugs all around (NGK Iridium IX's).

It's still throwing 0603...(sigh). If I can't get it fixed, I'm going to SNAP.

What else could throw an 0603?

How does the fuel system work? Would a dirty/clogged fuel filter cause a 0603 because of the fuel flow?

just curious, when did the putt putt start? was it b4 or after the plugs were replaced? if after there could be a defective plug

Did you try to replace the wires ? Go to your mechanic - may be he can check if the coil gets any volts from the wire.
Also take the spark plug from cyl #6 and look if the ground electrode isn't bent. (It happened to me - I replaced spark plugs and got cyl 6 misfire so I took the plug out and the ground electrode was bent, I guess it was bent due to detonation inside the engine. So I regapped the plug and no problems since then).
Moreover try not to apply too much torque on that plug , it should be just snug.

Have you cleaned TB? Cleaning TB has no help on misfire code. It could be plug or wire.

nitromax - new plugs were my first attempt to fix the putt putt putt

matrix - would try that but I had this issue before plugs went in. Unless I put the new ones in and I over torqued #6. I'll check.

svojs - cleaned the TB last winter. I could eat out of it.

Wires - I'll check. I have the FSM.
