Non Obd-ii
a car that has no OBD-II how is it tested on the computer to know what is the malfunction? with the OBD-II you can get the failures with the scanner but what about the ones that dont have it?

obd 1 and 2 are basically the same thing. the main differance is that the connector for obd 2 is universal for ease of use. per my haynes manual 93 and 94 are obd and 95 up are obd 2. my nissan FSM says nothing about obd2, just obd. the diagnistic tool i have says 96 and newer only.
either way i could give 2 poops. i have 2 98's both obd2, but answering his question obd1 can be read on older scanners and the car(whether it's a nissan or other) should have some manufacturer way to read codes. nissan is the screw on the computer, on my buick it was jumping 2 connectors on the plug and the CEL would flash.

you guys need to get a fukn life. the guy asked a question. instead of answering with **** that has nothing to do with what he said, why not take the time to attempt to answer his question? looks like he owns a 5th gen and maybe he has a friend with a 4th gen who he needs the answer for. so he assumed it wasnt obd2, big deal. a simple hey, 4th gens are all obd2 would have sufficed.
and that's why i stay out of these threads because of pimple faced geeks like you that have nothing better to do than virtual fighting.

I have yet to see/hear about a 4-gen that's obd1. Wouldn't make that much sense to develope a new car/engine/ecu and introduce it with the old OBD1 compliance. 1996 is the year it's required. BUT not the year Nissan decided to make the maxima OBD11 compliant.
That's all for today kids

Odd. If the electronics were not OBD11 compliant, it won't be able to read all the obd11 emission sensors.
Like I've said. I haven't read one post of someone complianing they couldn't get their codes read from an obd11 code reader. If it exists, I haven't read about it.
