Alternaotr recall?

I took my car to the shop today, and the guy gave me some info on an alty recall for 97-98s. He said that I can potentially get the alty for free. I did a bit more research and found out that I have to take it to the stealer to get it replaced. I am just asking you guys, if (a) anyone has ever taken advantage of this(and if you have, please tell me your experience, torubles, etc...) or (b) if this is even still applicable today. Thanks guys! Maybe I can get my alty for free!

call up the dealership's service dept. and let them run your vin, they'll tell you if your call qualifies. I have gotten recalls done on several different calls and different dealerships, never had a problem. Once, i brought an 03 altima for a diagnostic and they changed the rear crossmember free of charge under the recall. I was happy. So...call them up.

The alternator recall is for some 97's and 98's. There is somewhere online that lists the vin's affected if you do a search. I found this out after adding another amp to my system killed my alternator. I called up the dealership and got it replaced for free a week later. I had a really good experience with it overall.

I called the dealership about the recall. They told me the recall came out while the previous owner had the car so it would have had to be done by him. They refused to replace it for me.

The recall is a one-time thing. Yes, the dealer is usually competent to change it. Mine was no big deal, and in fact my alternator failed the week after the recall was annouced. Now that's timing.

I called the dealer here in KS after my alternator went poof. They said the recall didn't apply to my car because it was manufactured in April of 97. Apparently they used a different parts supplier after April 97. They did offer me free labor if I bought a new one from them, I declined.

Does anybody know what month 97 models are affected by the recall? I know mine was built in January '97

I read something else about the recal for the years and models. I dont remember where I saw it so I dont know if my car qualifies. I think it will but I want to make sure. Just gotta find that info.

i found a page with the vin numbers, it would be helpful if this was a sticky since I've posted this information numerous times. hopefully your VIN is under recall!

I find wetzelman1's response to be more helpful, it seems that mine wasn't affected

Bad News...my alty was not under the recall. I missed the vin by two digits...

Now, I need to know, there is a yard near me with a 97 max, and I am wondering, maybe I should pick up that alty? Or should I just end up getting a new/refurb one?

That video is gold. Period.

Any dealer can run the VIN BTW.

Well that's true but I didn't need to start a thread and refer to a website.

A single phone call to the dealer solved the problem for me in 5 minutes.
