Coolant changed colors?
Coolant changed colors?
just wondering what it might be.. i changed the coolant in my car and after that it turnes some kinda of rust color.. but theres o oil in it.. so i was wondering maybe the inner buildup came off or is it something else? thx in advance
sry mistyped thaT... meant to say theres no coolant in it..it just turns a rust color.. so i was wondering if changing the coolant cleared out the system, as the cooland before was never that color but neither had it been changed before that.
mine looked the same after the car was sitting for about a month.. and on top of that, I don't think the previous owner ever changed the coolant. (or, not recently). It was brown / rusty, not green @ all. So, i took out the res. bottle, washed it out, and drained the coolant as seen here: http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/502
I refilled it with water, and ran the engine to flush out as much of the crap as I could. drained, refilled a couple of times, then drained, and refilled with fresh coolant. Everything's been great since then, it's back to the normal color.

KOOL, thanks for the info guys, i'll try doing that sometime this week. (mine's brown color too) One question about the 50/50 mix though; Can i mix the coolant with regular water from a garden hose, or do i REALLY need "soft water"?
Distilled water is recommended i believe to keep the system clean over time, and I think it's also supposed to be better for your water pump. I didn't have any, so took the chance and used regular tap water to flush the engine, and to mix the prestone. No ill effects yet, everything has been great.
This dude told me that there's a specific way that a coolant change must be done. He said that you gotta time the radiator fans, also make sure that the radiator cap is closed, otherwise i'll get air pockets? On another note, i already bought a Prestone 50/50 mix.
every 20k or 2 years coolant needs to be flushed. If its changing colors you have exceed the time frame. I wouldn't bother with the radiator drain and fill. I would go and find a shop that has a coolant exchange machine which pumps fresh coolant through the engine and cleans out all the crap. My job has it and let me tell you.. you have no idea what went through the machines filter after I did my car.

Keeping the system closed will not allow the air pockets to be released. There is a nice coolant funnel burp system that im sure you can find at any automotive store. After exchanging coolant you put the adaptors on the radiator neck and the funnel on top. Pour 1/4 of coolant in the funnel start the car, heat high on blower setting low. Let it run till the cooling fans kick on. Shut off the car let it cool down and redo the proceedure. You can also keep the engine at 2k for a min or so to allow more air to leave.
