Bosch Plat vs NGK Plat Plug?
Ok I just picked up my 98 se and the previous owner installed a set of Bosch plat plugs right before he gave me the car. he said the plugs where original and was trying to be nice and change them for me.
The car has 85k on it and i was just wondering will the Orig NGK Plat plugs at $10 - $15 a plug make any kind of difference (gas milage, performance)?
The gas milage isnt that great to begin with and i have already cleaned the TB and IACV. I have also Seafoamed. The car idles very well i would just like better gas milage. My next step was to clean the MAF.
Just wanted to make sure it was worth all that extra money for the plugs. And what kind of difference people saw from cheap plugs to the NGK Plat plugs? Also what did you use to clean the MAF?

I dont know if its from the bosch plugs, but I know that Bosch isnt really good for Maxima's and that it might give u a misfire. so i'd say go back and get u the NGK V-power(if u dont wana spend that much) and it will run better.

Get the NGK coppers at Strauss, they cost $12 per set of six. They will last for 30k miles.
Six month ago I wanted to replace the old NGK platinums, and bought Bosch platinum+2 plugs. My engine strated vibrating in D and N so I had to return them for a refund and bought the Ngk V-power copper plugs and they make the engine running very smooth.

Its not my knock sensor. I checked for codes and resistance. I kinda figured the NGK Plat plugs would be better. I guess I just needed to hear it for myself.
I dont mind spending money as long as its worth it. Nothing worse then throwing your money away on crap that you dont need or dont work. I believe in buying the best the first time instead of buying crap 10 times.

I have had NGK plats and NGK Irids. I notice no improvement in the irids over the plats, and over time, I think I am actually noticing a decline. I will get plats next time, if there ever is one.
The electrical cleaner is CRC eletrical parts cleaner I believe. Get it at AutoZone, Checker, Kragen, Advance, NAPA.

All the anti-Bosch comments sound like a superstition to me!

My car's (95SE) original OEM NGKs were on the way out at 55k - earlier than the recommended life of 60k. The first set of Bosches made a huge improvement - probably since the old NGKs were worn out. So, I stayed with the Bosch plugs a second time. I used the +2 and changed them at 30k only because I wasn't sure what their lifespan would be. They looked and drove fine but since I had them out, I replaced them. Not expensive.
I'm on my second set of Bosch plugs. Car runs just fine.

I've got 66K on my original laser platinum plugs and I have had the car 12 years. The car runs like a champ and I can get over 500 miles to a tank of gas on a road trip consistently.
There have been a gazillion threads about Bosch plugs before. Get rid of them. They are more suited to European cars.
I will replace my plugs before I go through emissions testing next December at which time they may have 72/73K on them. I know someone with over 90K on his OEM platinum plugs for his 99 Maxima and his car still runs fine.
For my money, I will use OEM laser platinum plugs and forget the cost savings of buying V-power coppers. I would have been on my 3rd set of V-powers by now.
For those using Bosch plugs, you might as well use Fram oil filters and crappy oil while you are at it and don't forget that 87 octane is best for your Maxima.

how do i know my plugs need to be changed ? i have no problems with accerelation or anything else engine related, no knocking, car is a 97 with 204KM on it, bought it used dunno if plugs were ever replaced
i get 550 km / tank of gas a mix of hwy and city driving, so what are the signs of worn out plugs
also it seems hard to change the back ones how are they changed ?

my original plugs were replaced at the 60K service, but from there till 180K miles they were never replaced. I didnt find that out till i started to get a really bad misfire in the mid-high rpm range, it got worse then when i pulled the plugs are realized the condition of them i knew they had not been replaced in along time. According to the service history from the previous owner it was replaced at the 60K and never from then. The electrode on the plugs had worn down so much there was about a 1/4 to 3/8" gap. I replaced them with OEM NGK PFR5G-11 pre gapped and i noticed a few of my problems went away, hard starting when cold was one of them and the revs dipping low when i came to a stop with the cltuch in.

There are write ups on how to change the plugs. Check the stickies and www.motorvate.ca. Also you should buy yourself a Haynes manual.
To determine if your plugs need to be changed, take one out and look at it.
At 204,000 kilometres, I suspect your plugs have been changed before. The question is: what plugs are in there now?
By the way, 550 km/tank for a mix of highway and city driving is nothing to write home about. You should be able to get 550 km/tank with straight city driving if you don't drive the car like you stole it.
To determine if your plugs need to be changed, take one out and look at it.

Buy a Haynes manual, or if you are too cheap to do that, go to your local public library and if they have a manual borrow it and if they won't let you, then photocopy the relevant pages.

GEE-ZUS, here we go again with these threads knocking the Bosch platinums. I understand people have their negative expereinces, but damn people, others have had good expereinces with them as well. My dad has been using Bosch platinum +2 in his 95 max for as long as I can remember, def the majority of the car's life thus far (he bought it new, it now has 205K miles). Gets like 31mpg and car still has good power. Never had any problems associated with them. I use Bosch +4 in my 98 max and get damn good power too. No problems after the 30K miles I've put on them thus far.
Get what you want, but don't get scared into thinking your only choice is NGK plats or merely just NGK plugs. I swear, it's like some guys on this site have stock in NGK or something....
