Is it my input shaft bearing or release fork?
Is it my input shaft bearing or release fork?
So i'm hearing this squeal/whine sound when i'm releasing my clutch and catching first gear. This only happenes upon releasing the clutch and only in 1st gear. Otherwise i don't hear it. Neutral is fine and so are all the other gears.
What am i looking at? Is the Tranny going out or do i just need to replace my input shaft bearing, release fork, etc etc... This really sucks because i just replaced my clutch along with TOB, and PP just a few months ago...i asked the mechanic if there is anything else i should replaced while the tranny was out and he said nothing, but i still replaced the rear main seal and w/e i new about back when i was a complete noobie =D
If it is the shaft bearing would the tranny need to come out? What about for the release fork? My guess would be the release fork since this only happenes when releasing in 1st gear. Advice or imput is appreciated!

Hey, I have the same exact problem with my max. The only difference is my squell/whine occured immediatly after replaceing my clutch. I replaced my clutch, throw out bearing, PP, and put in a fidanza lightened flywheel. I did this myself with my brother and after I put everything back together i had this squelling problem. My brother is pretty sure it my throw out bearing. Even tho i replaced it he feels that we should have greased it up a bit. Anyway, i was thinkin of trying to squeeze a grease gun or wd40 onto the throwout bearing by going threw the clutch fork whole in the tranny (pull up the rubber boot) However my max is off the road right now and im at college so im not gona tackle anything right away. Anyone have this problem either? chances are me and you are gona have to pull that tranny out again
I really hope that's not the case...i just came back from my very trusted and knowledgeable mechanic we tried to diagnose the problem. I mean we did everything!! I drove, he drove, we did everything while driving trying to mimic the problem. Then we tried to check out the clutch with the handbrake up, i mean we tried everything and i couldn't mimic the problem.
He said he doesn't fell or notice anything that requires fixing. I feel that it does. I'm that type of person who's gonna fix something just because he thinks it's broken. But I'm still curious as to what might cause this. TOB would make noise with the clutch depressed and in neutral, and an input shaft bearing would make noise in most or all of the gears. HELP!!!

I've thought about this one quite a bit and the symptoms don't point to any obvious reason. I think that if it was t/o bearing shudder or clutch problem that it would also appear in some way in 2nd and/or reverse.
If it's a problem in the tranny, it makes very little sense since the torque has already been applied some by the time you're almost done engaging the clutch. So all the bearings, synchros, etc are under load, pushed into position, etc.
I would only monitor it unless I was already going into that part of the engine bay to do other work.
