Speed Sensor

When i bought my maxima the odometer worked on and off.. is this a common maxima problem? i have a friend who's same year 96 altima does the same thing.. hmm well the spedometer only works when it feels like it ..say i'll hit a small bump in the road and the needle will hit zero but then maybe 3 seconds or 3 hours later it will flip up to my exact speed.. the miles that read on my car are not correct.. how hard is it to access this sensor? are they cheap?

i have the same problem, ive found if you just tap the plastic over the guages the speedo and odometer will come back quick enough. i have a 97 though, if anyone has a cheap solution please post it.

omg man, please tell me you're joking. he's referring to the housing that contains the gauges for gas, speedo, tach, and temp. now surely you must know where that lies...

Well it could be the sensor or it could be the gauge cluster. The sensor is cheap, but it's a little hard to reach and tends to stick in the tranny.

Typically if the symptoms are intermittent like you describe it's electrical, which suggests the cluster.

PM me if you're interested in an SE gauge cluster with 133k on the odometer.

Before you go around replacing anything, you might want to try tightening the speedo srcews on the back of the cluster. Worked for a lot of guys on here.

if someone could just.. go out of their way and take a quick snap shot of where the screws are to tighten the spedometer screws... i'm not a automechanic.. i mean i know about my maxima but where are these screws and does it require me opening the hood? burrowing down by the pedals and shining a light up by the back of the housing?? i'd appretiate some indepth help here.. i'll wear the noob hat proudly here.
