p0136 0707 - Dreaded rear o2 sensor code, need help...

I scanned for the code and got p0136, so I ordered a brand new rear o2 sensor from the dealer. Got it installed and made sure everything was connected tight. Cleared the code and took a short drive (about 5 minutes) and the p0136 code came back.

P0136 - Downstream oxygen sensor or circuit fault

What else could be the problem if its not the o2 sensor ?

I definitely changed the sensor after the cat, and not the ones on the y-pipe.

I wouldn't want to try an o2 simulator unless that was the last resort. I thought 02 simulators were used if you had no cats ( a different trouble code) , or if you wanted to get rid of the o2 sensor altogether.

The rear sensor is brand new from the dealer, so I'm just hoping it isn't some other electrical problem.

Does anyone know what could cause P0136 (0707) - Downstream oxygen sensor or circuit fault besides the actual o2 sensor?

Did you get the correct O2 sensor with 4 wires ?

Try to reset it again , if the code comes back go back to the dealership and return it for a refund or exchange it for another one.

Better get a refund and get the Bosch sensor from ebay for $28 shipped. You will save a lot of money (let me know if you need a link). I bought my rear O2 sensor on ebay and it works perfect. Even the Evap codes disappeared after I installed the new O2.

There might be also a physical damage to the cat converter, may be that's why the sensor isn't getting any readings.

I have the old sensor in my hands and I only see 3 wires (red, black, white).

$28 shipped? Is it a universal sensor that you need to splice? sure PM me the link...

Are you sure you had 4 wires?

Are you sure you removed the correct sensor ? Only the front sensors have 3 wires. The back sensor has 4 wires.

You have to remove the sensor which is inside the cat converter (under the front seats), not the ones in the engine bay.

Here are the links:
The bosch listing just ended so you will have to wait for it to be relisted or just contact the seller: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-B...temZ8057792500

Here is the NGK which is good too: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-N...mZ160043758959

This is the link for all maxima sensors from this seller:

Yes I'm positive , it has 4 wires (0707= rear O2 sensor).
I installed all 3 O2 sensors together with my mechanic (I spliced the wires by myself). Only the front sensors have 3 wires; the rear one has 4 wires.

Who installed your sensor ? Probably they took out the front sensor instead of the rear one. Those mechanics know less than average .org member

what year is the car? if he has a 1995, the sensor only has 3 wires. If you changed the sensor and the code returned, you might have a problem with your cat, or y pipe. I'd check those things out.

I did have my mechanic replace it, but I was standing under the car the entire time watching him. Its definitely the o2 sensor on the cat, under the seats.

The year is a 96, manufactured 3/96. I'll probably take a closer look myself when I have time on Thursday, at the very least to verify all the wiring.

I do have a high flow cat, but thats been there for 2-3 years now, but I assume that could be part of the problem. Wouldn't a bad cat throw in a different DTC?

gobble gobble

Went under the car and made sure the sensor was on tight and then I checked the connector/harness and everything looks good. I reset the code and drove 15 minutes and the code came back. Reset it again, 15 minutes later its back again.

dayam... I need to pass inspection this month. Any other ideas?

So hey soybeanz, what happened? I have the same problem as you now, and I'm trying to figure out what I have to do.

Would a Bosch sensor provide the same quality as an OEM one? For example the one matrix11229 gave you the link for ->
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-B...temZ8057792500

Anyone!!! Please help!

Yeah, what happened. I would suggest checking fuses first, then clean the 2 grounds located right in front of the intake manifold. If that doesn't work I'd then check for voltage at the O2 sensor, and if that all fails, I'd check for coninuity of all the harnesses. Good luck.

soybeanz,
How did things turn out? I've got the same code and the mechanic says it's going to be $200+. I was wondering if I should attempt this myself? But I wanted to get your input and see what you thought.

So, do let me know. I'd send you a PM but I don't have enough privelages yet.

Thanks,
-deep

for those with recurring O2 code -- it could just be a defective sensor. or the mechanic got anti-seize on the sensor head, etc etc. either way, have the mechanic fix his work.
