Urgent! Loud Squeel at startup. Starter?

Alrighty, well I am into another tight issue. I get this really loud(I mean loud) squeel at startup. I believe it is my starter, since I have been having startup issues the past week or so, and the alst two days I have noticed a small 'chirp' at startup. Now that I washed my car and engine bay tonight, I go to start it and it squeels. Its not a screech, like a belt or anything, its a squeel, and I dont know how long it lasts(I havent 'pushed' its limits), but its for more than 5 seconds. Anyway, do I need to regrease it or should I just let the car run for a few minutes? (Neighbors would probably call the cops or something...) Advice??

check your belts first even tho u say its not them or have some1 start is and stand with the hood popped in front and listen to where it comes from..when my starter went bad there were not squealing sounds..but when my belt needed to be tightened or loosened it squealed.

so have some1 start it
dont turn it off when it starts making the noise
listen to where it is coming from

The starter retracts, so after start up if it is the starter like you say it may be it shouldnt last a belt could tho I have had some pretty long lasting sqeals from the belt and so has my friend..real long

Alright, well it basically went away. I am not sure why, but it started fine. I cant remember, but I think the 'chirp' was still there. I will tell you all tomorrow if I get any rough starts when cold, or if it squeels, etc...Thanks for your help man!

tighten your belt tensioner. your starter would go away once you turned key back. rev car for a second and it should go away. my car always does that. if that doesnt change it your belt is most likely scored from heat. look and see if its cracked or shiny. if it is then you need a new one for sure. and dont let it go. if it snaps you wont like it

i had a squeel like that on my old 96 maxima and it was the alternator. check the belts first though. My 99 does it sometimes when its cold but its quick. If it lasts for a long time it most likely is the alternator or the alternator belt.

im with him. check the alternator one. that tensioner is easy to get to also. should have no problem checking it. is it scored or cracked?

umm could also be the starter sticking, so a regrease wouldnt be a bad idea, or a new one! Since I had that problem and I replaced mine and tightened my belts and it went away, so could be either. However you said you have starting issues so I think its the starter. However tighten your belts first before you go buying a new one I may be wrong.

was the noise during the starting or right after the starting?
Did it happen only on cold starts? Did it go away on warm starts?

a few months ago, I had some noise right after the start. It happened on cold starts. When the car warms up, it starts to get away. For example, in the morning at the first start, the noise might be 5 seconds. After driving for 4 miles and a stop, the noise after the second start would be 4 seconds. If the car is driven longer, the noise gets less and less noticable. After hours of driving, I can't hear any noise after any start.

I drove to Autozone and asked them to test my battery. It turns out to be good. Then I popped up the hood and showed them the noise. After a few domos, a senior experienced guy said that my starter had problem disengadging properly from the flywheel after the starting.

I did some research, consulted my mechanic and finally concluded that the root cause is the starter.

I replaced the starter, and the noise never happen again.
just my 2 cents.

I believe I'm having the same starter problem. After the engine turns over I here a sound similar to a buzzer or maybe a kind of grinding. But if I'm correct the starter is more to the driver side. The belts squeeling come from the passenger side, I've had that too.

Starting problem

I am having the same problem it squeals, if I can start my car at all.
I have replaced my starter at least 5 times and keeps going bad on me and no one seem to know why?. This seemed to start when I replaced my clutch. I have a hard time to start my car at times, I have to crank it several times before it catches. ( I guess that would be one reason why my starter dies ) Any ideas????
