Anyone have a shift kit installed? Where did you get it? How much? Did you install or have it professionally done?

Well, he said Auto, so I'm asuming he's talking a valve Body mod from Don.

The trans-go shift kit costs like $60-65 .. labor .. dunno. If you have a beater / spare car, and can afford to d!ck around with it, go for it I'm sure if yer a decent gearhead you can do it.. others have.

The Transgo shiftkit is just a Valvebody recalibration. It makes the car shift faster and harder, and speeds up the downshifts also. The kit is rather involving for how few parts it contains. The biggest thing is that it requires you disassemble your whole valvebody. Not for your weekend warrior mechanics, and I'm sure a shop would charge a ton for labor, if they'ed even do it. Mine took me about 6-7 hours to install. Definetly a pain in the as$! Hope this helps.

mtrai760 covered it very well. I believe its a spring replacement set for your VB. Anyways, supposed to make shifts firmer/quicker.

Not exactly the same as Don's vb mod, i think, he covered it once, i just dont remember.

Don's VB mod vs. Trans-go Shift kit

This was somewhat settled awhile back. BigTexan (spell?) got a Trans-Go and installed it in his car. He then rode in Don's car, I believe, with the VB Mod and claimed that the VB mod made the car shift firmer than the Trans-Go. This was in some thread awhile back. So basically, if I read the thread right, the Trans-Go helps but the VB Mod is better. Trans-Go is also much more involved when installing it. The VB mod is relatively easy, if you follow the instructions and take your time.

Can Don's VB mod be done yourself?

I checked maximadriver.com and saw the How2 for Don's VB mod, but I noticed that the instructions only explained how to take out the transmission. I was wondering if the VB mod can be done yourself. If that's not possible, then where can I get the transgo kit. Thanks!

It can be done by yourself. I prefer having help, since the lil things are always what gets you, and its especially true for the tranny.

The key is that its gonna be MESSY .. and the bolts you take out have to be the right ones (Don gives you a blow up map) .. and they have to be the same ones back in the same hole.

Sounds simple yes, but they all look the same. We taped them to paper with #'s .. its really a complicated bolt on, and thats about it. Just the thot of toyin with tranny scares ppl.

Don gives great instructions for the VB mod. It's a straight foward swap, with only three different bolt sizes that are grouped together. When pulling it out, I used the same X's and O's that Don labled the bolts with on plastic Zip lock bags, and had no problems. If you are worried about doing a Mobiltek VB mod, then DO NOT try a transgo kit. It requires you disassemble the three levels of the VB, which contain a bunch of different size bolts on each level, along with bearings and springs. It requires that you drill holes in parts of your VB, and replace springs. Oh yeah, the instructions it comes with are meant for a tranny shop that does them daily. Very basic and hard to understand, no detail at all. Haynes manual you say? Not in there either. Not to steer anyone away from a mod, I just want to put out the info so no one get's over there heads. The transgo kit significantly decreased shift times, but it is most noticable while driving normally. On the bottle, it still seems to take forever. IMHO, I believe that Don's VB shifts harder and faster, though I have yet to ride in a Max with one installed. Just my $.02
