Engine swap question

my bro had a 98 VQ30 engine installed on his 95 Maxima and was told by the mechanic that its not creating a spark. does he need a 98 ECU for it to work. I thought he could use 95-99 engines on hise 95 Max? any help is appreciated!!

No spark in all 6 cylinders?? and yes you can use those engines can be used in different years with out changing ecu's. I am using a 2000 motor with my 95 ecu.

define "not creating a spark" means. is he not creating a spark on all 6 cylinders?
he can use his existing ecu with no problems.

Are all 3 timing sensors installed and connected (CPS POS, CPS REF, and Cam pos. sensor)?

Yeah, there is no spark on all 6 cylinders.

hes got a 5 speed but thanks for the offer. they are going to take closer look at the engine today. i beleive 2 of the ignition coils are bad but the they couldnt use the 95 coil because it wa shorter then the 98.

The 95 Coils will fit onto the 98 motor. The rears are different then the fronts so be carefull on that.

I would swap all the 95's over and see if it still wont start.
Check that all the sensors and such are plugged in as well

emissions on 95 and 98 are different the 95 is missing a wiring harness. should he try to find that part at pick n pull? i assume this will cause a CEL at some point.

another question. the motor was connected to an automatic transmission and my bro has a 5 speed. would this have any negative effect as far as getting the engine to work? I thought when swapping an engine it doesnt matter what transmission it was connected to.

thanks in advance for everyone's help and feedback

SHouldn't cause a problem besides a check engine light. The 98 auto maxima ecu was in a 95 5 speed infiniti for a while. Only issue i ever saw was a check engine light. Should start and run fine.

UPDATE

Okay, so after some tinkering, the mechanic was able to get the car started. Now the problem is that the car will not go past 3,500 RPMs on any gear. The interesting thing is that he couldn't use his 95 ECU on the 98 engine he purchased. It would not start. He purchased a 97 ECU and the car started. Any ideas why the car would not go past 3,500 RPMs?

I thought it might be the MAF sensor but that cuts the fuel out at 2400 RPM. When the ECU is bad there is a fuel cut at 3000 RPM. Are the fans on full-time, even when the car is cold? If so, the ECU is bad.

man, nothing but trouble so far. here are the codes he is getting.

0803
0103
0402
0304
0903
0801
0804 this is the one that is confusing since the car is a 5 speed. the code is meant for automatic transmission right? A/T comm line. could wiring be f'd up? the used engine was previously connected to an A/T, is there something the mechanic forgot to remove? He has a 5 speed ECU installed.

I was about to say, make sure the mechanic used the 5 SPD ECU. There is no way that code should show on a manual ECU if that is an automatic trouble code.
