Car dying after start up...NEED HELP

hey my girlfriend's 95 maxima has a problem. When i start the car, it starts and then the idle drops and the car dies. If i rev the engine a lil and keep the idle going for a few seconds, then its ok. It happens all the time. Any idea why it could be doing this?

clean the TB.. tis the season for this to happen alot more... The gunk on and around the butterfly in the TB hardens during the colder weather. causing you to have to brake past the sludge.. even if it is a small amount.

try this before you start worrying about expensive repairs

does it sound like it's running out of fuel. Could be fuel pump. Or Fuel relay fuse. Check that.

Sounds like it might be the Engine Coolant Temp Sensor. Changing this has fixed that exact problem for many people.

clean it first before you go buying parts. and a bad coolant temp sensor will work in reverse. acting up when the car is warm because the ECU still thinks it is cold.

oh didn't know that, i thought it could cause stalling when cold or warm. but anyway you can check your codes too if you haven't already. the faulty ECTS will give you code 0908. if that's your problem, and cleaning doesn't work, it's only around $20-$30.

I had the same problem last year, it was a dirty throttle body. Changed the coolant temp sensor, and MAF (those weren't the problem on mine) before I cleaned the TB. Do that first since its the cheapest

My car stalled on me tonight on the freeway in stop'N'Go Traffic.

Cars started to move and all of a sudden my gas pedal didnt rev the engine and all the gauge cluster lights turned on. I started it again, and it happened a second time. I had to keep putting it in neutral and rev'in it in order to stay moving.

Any idea? Its been working fine before..

it could be your car just being moody in the cold weather or it could be a serious problem..

definitly do the TB cleaning as shown on the motorvate site ^

i had the same problem (before it got cold outside) and so i changed my oil and spark plugs.. and no more problem.

also definitly check for CEL codes as mentioned above.. if a combo of TB cleaning, oil change and spark plug change dont do it.. then you may have a problem.

totally different problem from the original poster. He has a cold die and you have a hot stall. now yours sounds like it may be the coolant temp sensor (or even may need a coolant system flush if there is any buildup). You have a few more possible causes.

Is the check engine light on? If yes, did you check the codes? Knowing that the light is/isn't on may eliminate a few possibilities.

Its on the Right side of the motor on the coolant log. There are Two sensor there...One (smaller one) is for your temp gauge, and the larger one with the larger connector is your ECTS

Mine just started this today. I have one more symptom though. When starting, I can hold they key in the "Start" position and the motor will spin over a couple times, then act like I turned the key back, then right back over.. Kind of a delay in the starter or something, only for a split-second. I am thinking that may be my starter but it still doesn't explain the other problem. Unless the starter getting stuck can pull the motor down after start-up as well.

Could the ects cause stalling when switching to reverse? Because I thought it was my iacv that was causing that problem so I got a new one put in but I still have the same problem. Although its much less which is why I think it may be a wire to the iacv or something. And now I have the same problem as max n action

maveric, check your battery and super-ground your starter.

brad, check yoru radiator for coolant (to make sure it is full). air pockets can cause that when warm. but the temp sensor may be the cause.

Thanks bro.

Is it just a plug? I disconnected the bigger plug and it was full of all this orange/brown grease. I cleaned it out thinking it caused a faulty connection.

I couldn't find where the plug lead to. Anymore tips?

Definitely.
Did you check the codes yet? Do you know how to do it? Look in the stickies on the main page if you don't. There's a "help, my check engine light it on" thread.
If it's a sensor problem, the code that you get should tell you what the issue is. If it is the coolant temp sensor the code will br 01 03 or 09 08.
let me know what you come up with.

Bump to this question. Mine also stalls when shifting gears.

anyways, can someone provide pics of the ECTS and how to change it/buy replacement/install it/anything else?

ps: i've noticed my Temp gauge acting funny at times, sometimes on the highway it will be at mid range, and then drop half way really quickly.
