$3k easily spent @ NISSAN !

Basically.....it was time to make some repairs on my POS Max...
Tranny rebuild - 2000
EGR ports cleaned / new sensor / new hoses - 800
O2 sensor - 250

So, thats about $15k so far this damn car has cost me --- why stop now? No upgraded car in the future.....am I right?

I wouldn't be caught dead spending 3K on repairs, I'd sell it and use those 3K to get another one, you could get a decent MAX with LOW miles for under 5K.

Maybe it's cuz I don't get attached to my cars...

But anyways no price is too high to show love for your ride

considering what all you've done to the car, you're right...3 large is not that big a deal. As long as you can afford to do it!!! I also had to get a new trans and I paid about $2000 for tranny and install. That was 4 years and over 110,000 miles ago. The car is paid for and still running good.

And ot think. You could have cleaned your EGR yourself (sensor adn all) for about $10 in TB cleaner and 4 hours. Not to mention yoru Throttle Body and IAC Valve would have been cleaned at the same time too. not to mention $250 for an O2 sensor? The sensor is $100 from nissan and the tool needed is prob another $20. Time to change............30 minutes if even that. what can we conclude from this?

Total Cost of your repairs minus tranny rebuild?...........$1050
Total Cost of same repairs done yourself?..............$135
Peace of mind knowing you saved yourself $915 by doing it yourself?....................................... PRICELESS!!!

To clean the EGR stuff it is 2 bottles of TB cleaner and some tools.

WTF? You KNOW Nissan is the most expensive place to get work done. You go there, then complain about the prices???

Really, it's your own damned fault. Stop whining or sell the car.

wow, talk about suicide. I love how everyone relies on warranty to save their life. I dont trust any of those dealership mechanics anymore than anywhere else. You get a warranty and then they fu*k your car up so you gotta keep bringing it back and leaving it there for days at a time that sounds worth it to me...
i just think it gets to a point where you have to take many things into consideration...and with cars this old and dealership prices that high it just doesnt ammount to practical unless you've got money to throw away.
just my opinion though.

Somtimes ill take my car to the dealership to get certain work performed, the stuff i dont trust myself/think im capable of doing. Actually i believe the transmission that they sell are not brand new, they are rebuilt units, as far as i know they stopped making new RS5F50V's. The rebuilt units they sell, or atleast at my dealership look very good, the housings look brand new, all sensors/wiring is new, and the internals are basically all new, its just the housing thats used. My work sells them for 1150CAD, i believe that is my price (cost + 5%). If my tranny blows im just going to get one from there, 3 year/60KMwarrenty and getting a rebuilt one is going to cost rougly the same, i got quoted 1K by most people with 1 year 20km warrenty.

You got ripped on the o2 sensor, nissan pays $82CAD for o2 sensors, i can get them for 87$, it cost me about 100USD to get done, considering i was working 6 days a week i had no time to do it, so i paid and got it done with warrenty.

u shoulda just bought something else with 15 Gs. If you plan on keeping it, then I would agree, that u get a tranny rebuild and make sure everything is a-okay. but I wouldnt ever do that....lol u crazy, Id rather take my chances with a used tranny for a quarter of that price.

I'm surprised the new tranny was only $2k installed. I figured a dealer would get more than that.

250 for the O2 is about right for a dealer. the part alone is about $175, plus an hour labor to put it in, test it, etc. the guy I bought my '99 from paid $367 for an O2 at continental nissan in suburban chicago.

800 bux for the egr cleaning seem high, though. unless I just don't understand what is involved in such a job.

Wow, I sure hope this was a special dealer that actually knew how to rebuild the tranny according to their own service manual instructions...

because I have yet to find one.

it is only $100 at Pinnacle if you ship it out of state. if you take your car there for repair they charge $140 for the part, and most other nissan dealers across the country the part varies from $150 to $185 (those were the quotes I got when i did mine) -- and yes, I did end up ordering it from Pinnacle (I actually paid $107 for it).

I have never needed my oxygen sensor replaced and the max has 277k miles on it. Still get the 302 code because I haven't cleaned the EGR valve and ports. Still get great gas mileage.

wow. as long as you are happy with the end result. i just spent 1300 on parts and labor for moog balljoints and inner tierods + ES bushings + amsoil atf (gaskets and those damn pan bolts) + 4 fresh proxes4 + suspension install. i'm that much poorer and damn well can't afford it.

but i'm happy. no more shimmy at any speeds, quiet new tires, and the peace of mind that the tranny has some extra protection.

iirc. isnt [AMD] down in atl? im sure those guys wouldve helped u out.

Now I know I remember seeing you with your car half torn apart, trans on the floor when you had your exedy clutch problems, why didn't you do the trans replacement yourself? Good luck man, I can't imagine dumping that much into my Maxima. That's exactly what I'm afraid of though-- getting raped on some repairs that I really don't want to pay for. I'm absolutely against spending any more money on my Maxima, and really, I haven't spent that much on her.

BigLou -- I can openly admit I damn sure dont have the time or knowledge to do a rebuild (even though it may turn out easier than I think)

Clutch/Flywheel was something I COULD do.....but Im just so sick of working on it myself honestly.

I tried fixing everything myself for the EGR code - but the tranny issue and the starting problem were beyond me.

So I said F8ck IT and dropped it off @ Nissan and got an 06 XTERRRA rental

car work should not cost $100/hour labor or whatever they charge some places.

cant people hire mechanics on the side, to work on their vehicle? Heck, I'm there are some mechanics that would make more if you just paid $30-40/hour straight to them.

Oh, I wouldn't trust myself to rebuild the trans myself. All I meant was you could have saved at least a bit on labor for taking your trans out yourself, and bringing it to a shop to rebuild, and then have you put it back in. What's that, like 5+ hours of labor for just trans removal and installation? At least a couple hundred of dollars, which I guess seems small anyways compared to the whole repair bill anyways. That's all I was saying.

But I do hear ya on being sick of working on your Maxima. Good luck, no disrespect intended.
