Smoke and whine coming from engine...
Fack...I just changed the axle now this. Drove home from my cousin's house about an hour ago. Only a 40 mi or so trip. As soon as I get back to the city I smell this abnormal burning smell...smells like rubber being burnt. It's raining and I'm in the city so I didn't think much of it...I rolled the windows down and turned the heat off to see if it was my car. The smell temporarily went away. As soon as I goto park I see smoke coming from the engine, and the smell came back stronger than ever. I lift the hood, even though its, dark and all this smoke came from down inside my engine, between the radiator resevoir, the radiator, and the serpentine belt. I couldn't really see, but it also looked like there was some kind of fliud (antifreeze???) on a hose that went to the engine from the radiator. The screech that I heard, stayed consistent until I turned the engine off. The gas pedal or brakes had no effect on it. The temperature gauge also didn't move.
Help...I gotta drive home 170 miles tomorrow and I really don't have the money for this to be anything serious, atleast while I am out of town. I'm gonna crank it up tomorrow morning, and pop the hood and see what the damage is...it was dark so I couldn't see if any hoses or belts were damaged.

it's hard giving suggesions without actually looking... my best suggesion would be taking it to a local mechanic and tell them the problem, it would probebly cost approx. $30 bucks or less, then you know if you can chance it home or not. I had a similar incident where my muffler was making a funny sound, it bothered me but it was nothing that serious, after putting my exhaust on it made the sound worst, came to find out that my 6th spark plug was miss firing, and i was driving a while with it like that, best thing to do is use some of that christmas money and check it out

it's probably your alternator, have your battery and brake lights come on? since you have a 1998 you can most likely get it changed for free due to the recall. If you can somehow get it to the nearest dealership, you might be able to get it fixed for nothing.
Edit just noticed you have a de-k. well, I guess you're not covered by the recall.... but from what you described, it sounds like the alt might be your problem. let us know what else you find out.
